What can't two wheel tractors do?

We bought a BCS 2 wheel tractor this year and I am really impressed with it so far. No it won't pull the weight my 50hp 4x4 Kubota will, no it won't pull the 600lbs aerator around the yard as well as the BX does but none of them will fit in a lot of the places the BCS fits and the BCS is a lot safer and more stable on the steep hillsides. Every machine has its place and I have to say i'm impressed with what all the BCS can do for its size.
The bad thing is finding used implements is tough and some are a bit pricey. I love the log splitter idea,as it makes its self self propelled but the price is a bit steep.

Code 54, in your opinion how much a two wheel drive or a FWD/ FWA will or won't do depends on the experience, skill, determination of the operator?

It is like anything, every equipment has its place.

I remember going to the logging expo's back 20 years ago and the logger's in Maine puffing up their chest looking at the smaller cut-to-length equipment coming out of Canada and Sweden and laughing at it and saying haw they would break it in half. Twenty years later they either own the equipment they laughed at, or are out of business. The days of thrashing in the woods with heavy iron is just plain over.

I have some pretty big equipment myself including skidders, tractors and bulldozers for land clearing, but I have quite a few acres too. I actually make the most money per cord parking my skidder and using my Kubota farm tractor. On average I can pull 6 cords per day out, while with my skidder I can pull 10 cords. The skidder however uses 20 gallons of fuel, and the Tractor uses 4. It takes more time to get the wood out, but on a per cord basis, I actually make more money.

My Father always wanted a 2 wheel tractor and after selling my last bulldozer, took some of the money to buy him one. For him it is perfect

I have a little under 20 acres of forest.

If I need to haul wood or logs, I use one of my 4x4 trucks (small Toyota and large Dodge with 8x12 flatbed).

I use my Grillo for mowing and brush cutting. It will not pull anything of any significant weight, including logs - I use the trucks for that (usually the big truck as the small truck will just sit there and spin it tires on large logs or logs in a pile). I had to use the small truck to pull a drag harrow to smooth out some ground because the Grillo would not pull it - just spin its tires.

This is why I say a 2 wheel tractor will have problems with pulling weight - probably even with a trailer - there just isn't enough traction there. Even my small truck has problems with some logs (granted, skidding them instead pulling a trailer).

For pulling things, if you didn't have a truck or 4 wheel tractor, an ATV will work for many things.

YMMV

That is why I wondered if a log trailer would work? It would increase the traction by 300% because you would have 4 additional tires pulling (or tracks on the 2 wheel tractor, and tracks across the tandem trailer wheels).

Years ago we used to haul pulp wood out of the woods in 4 foot lengths, and with old 2 wheel tractors, using power trailers worked well. That just consisted of a homemade trailer where a PTO shaft came out of the tractor and into a transmission that went to a differential that powered the trailers axle. With all the weight on a powered axle, it was actually better than a 4x4 tractor pulling a trailer because the wheels powered through mud, snow and stumps and rocks, and did not "trig" like on a non-powered wheel.

ATV Log trailers have two unique features; they have powered tandem axles on walking beam suspensions, as well as having a hydraulic cylinder that adjusts the positioning of axle on the trailer frame so that weight transfer can be ideal (adjust tongue weight on the fly). Since they have their own powerpacks (engines and hydraulics), about the only thing the 2 wheel tractor is doing is steering the trailer.

Again, my log trailer is NOT an ATV one so it does not have powered wheels, though it does have a movable axle. But I bought mine to fit on my tractor/bulldozer/truck.

To answer the question about hauling stuff in trailers, that is what the powered trailers are for-- you have to have a two wheel tractor with a groundspeed option on the PTO. There are different types though, and what I have has a steering wheel, so in truth, its more like I have a small 4wd pickup with ag tires, and it took me so long to undo all the borden cables to go back and forth that I bought a second two wheel tractor for rotary plowing, etc. and just leave the first (which has the diesel engine) set up with the trailer. At one point we had nearly a cord of wood stacked precariously on it. Goldoni 140 Super Special - Google Photos

Yet, you can go with a powered trailer where the handle bars stay on and you steer and control it with them. Such an option would be quick to put on and off. http://www.labinprogres.hr/ea/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/GreenPP1000-1.png

Unpowered trailers behind two wheel tractors are only useful where there is no significant slope.

A fair amount! A lot also depends on the tire choice (part of experience) as well as picking the proper "line." We work on hills and mountains all the time and I pay a lot of attention to my wheel placement not only to prevent roll overs but to find traction. Often I run a wheel on the edge of the trail so I can get some extra traction from more solid undisturbed ground or perhaps some rocks that are in the soil that can give me a bit more traction.

Is this what people are talking about here? I thought they were talking about 2 wheel DRIVE versus 4x4.

:) Yes this thread is in the 2 wheeled tractor section. Grillo and BCS are the main brands in the U.S. but there are many others world wide.
