We came across this in a friends attic, lots and lots of neat stuff. Most of the items we were able to figure out, but this one is still leaving us guessing. My best guess is some sort of a fly or insect trap. I'll let you decide.

It's made of metal insect screen, about 10 inches high, and has a removable bottom. The very center of the bottom has a 3/8" hole.

We don't know if the bottom should be pointing in, or out.

I know there is someone on TBN that has seen this thing before. . . . .

I don't know, but it would be nice to put crickets in and go fishing! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The larger part has a place to hang it with.

The house it was found in was not associated with any type of farm, could have come from prior owners.

I don't believe it's related to straining milk. Made of insect screen, and the way it appears to be hung. . . .

The first thing that comes to mind is 'crickets'. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif You know, fishing, crickets, bait cage. 'see attachment' from Sportfishing museum.

I think it's a cake or food cover, that was placed over a cooling cake or pie or other food, to keep flies off of it. I think it had a knob on top that went were the hole is.

If the dome lid can be inserted with the curve going into the cage, it could be a minnow trap. The curve directs them into the hole, but it's difficult to find the way out.

I think you got it, Doc. That looks like my grandpa's minnow trap. My grandma use to feed the minnows bread off the pier at their cottage every day. They got very use to it. When gandpa would need some minnows for bait, he would put some bread in the trap and they'd swim right in and couldn't get out. He'd keep a few for bait and let the rest go. They'd come right back every time.

You're right, it does look like a minnow trap. Although given the size, 10"long, about 3"dia, and a 3/8in hole in the cone, I think that it would be a little small for a minnow trap. Now if it were about 18"L X 10"dia there abouts, with the funnel end hole 3/4 to 1" I may be inclined to agree with you. Ofcourse minnows may be a lot smaller in the north. All of that cold water could stunt their growth. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I would have to go with a minnow trap. we use something similar to catch minnows for smelt fishing.

I'd say minnow trap, too. Although the ones we use have the inverted funnel entrance at both ends and the unit is split in half to open.

It looks simular to traps my neighor used to trap Japanese beetles. The only difference is his also had a metal cap simular to a cap you would see on a vent pipe. The beetles would fly under the cap, go down through the hole and like a minnow trap, have a hard time finding the hole to get back out. The screen looks to fine for a minnow trap, it would catch to much silt and debris, the hole also looks to small for a minnow trap.

Sorry I didn't read the size in the first post. That would be an awfully small minnow trap./w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif If it is a cricket cage, the stopper is missing.

It is about 18" x 10" if you compare it to the width of the hardwood floor boards which have to be about 3" wide. I believe it is a minnow trap.

According to SKENT who found it..
It's made of metal insect screen, about 10 inches high, and has a removable bottom. The very center of the bottom has a 3/8" hole.

If you notice the upper right hand side of the photo, it is on a table. Could be a butcher block table not necessarily made from 3" floor boards. We can go on guessing for ever but I'll bet that if we were to see it in person, most of us would know exactly what it is. /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

Yes it's on a butcher block table. Bottom is about 5: in diameter, overall about 10 inches in length.

I guess it will be left on the shelf as a cricket trap.

Anyway. . . . it looks interesting. . . . . . .

Thanks for all the replies
