NH TC 45S
Delivered today at 6pm a NH TC 45S Serial # G511017 MFWD, 12x12, Woods 1016 FEL Bush Hog SQL 720. 2 Questions from a serious newbie to tractors, 1 what the heck did I buy, I mean what year is it? I can find may references to TC 45D's but what is an S?

#2 What am I missing, the PTO shaft spins but NOT the blades.

Never had a tractor before and never had a cutter either (obviously) Thanks for helping the seemingly helpless!

I think the S is for Supersteer which is a different front axle setup that allows you to turn very sharp. As for the rotary cutter, it sounds like a shear bolt sheared. When the tractor shut off, follow the pto shaft from the back of the tractor to where it hits the gear box of the cutter. There should be a hole where the shear bolt should go thru to connect the pto to the shaft of the gear box.

I am assuming you bought this from an individual and not a dealer. If so you will want to go to the nearest dealer and get a manual for the tractor and read it. If it did come with one the read it and try to take in as much as possible. I like to get the manuals for all my equipment (even cutters) as they can be handy when you are looking up specs for something.

Thanks for letting me know. I feel stoopid.. I knew that there were shear pins, I just didn't add 2+2 and get 4. Still wondering what year it is? Anyone have a guess?

I have no idea how to decode the year directly from the ser. #, but I think there is a date-stamped metal plate somewhere on the thing with a date on it. Try looking on the engine block, the firewall, and the frame rails under the hood for a start.

It can't be too old, since NH hasn't had a TC45S on the market for very long; certainly not much more than 5 years, if that long.

The year really doesn't matter anyway... what is more important is the number of hours on the meter. If it's less than 300hrs, it's nearly new. If its not much more than that, and it's just starting to be broke in.

I'm pretty sure that the S is 'Supersteer' which means you've got yourself a very nice little machine there. It'll turn a real tight circle, way tighter than you would expect for a tractor if it has Supersteer. Go slow doing it though...

As for the mower, you probably have a sheared pin, or you haven't fully attached the PTO shaft to the tractor. It should have a ring on it that will snap in good and tight to the tractor when it's on correctly.

The other possibility (unlikely) is that the gearbox on the mower itself has been pulverized internally and needs to be rebuilt. It should have an oil drain on it, you can open it up . If you smell burned oil, or if you see a lot of metal in the oil, that's your problem. I doubt that is the case, those gearboxes are pretty tough and can take a real beating.

Go see a dealer to get a new shear pin, or you can get them at any Tractor Supply Co (TSC). You might think about putting a slip clutch on the mower to remove the possibiliity of shearing another pin once you get it running. They do their job, but replacing them can be a big pain in the butt when they shear off at the far end of a field.

Bushhog and I think Woods manuals are available online.

Can you post a picture? Does it say TC45S on the tractor or does it say TC45A? It sounds like a TC45A to me. Does the paperwork say TC45S? As Robert asked, did you buy from a dealer or an individual?

The slipping PTO might be a misadjusted PTO clutch on the cutter. Some have shearbolts and some have PTO clutches. It sounds like one or the other. Did you engage the PTO quickly with the tractor rpm up? If so, you have probably snapped the shearbolt. You have to engage the PTO slowly - very slowly.

The easiest way to see if you have SuperSteer on that 45 is to fully turn the wheels left or right and see if the front axle articulates in the direction of the turn. If the axle does then you've been bit by the SuperSteer bug. See picture

I did buy it from a dealer but he's a K dealer who took her in trade. She has 490 hrs on her and looks really well maintained, greased, etc. The plate on the frame directly under the operator's left foot is where I discovered that I had a TC 45S. I did get a operators manual for the 1016 loader and the TC 45. I'll get one for the SQ 720 today as well as the shear pins for the BH. I spent countless hours reading this site yesterday to see what I could learn. Y'all are INVALUABLE to the newest of the newbies. I did notice that I have 2 headlights as opposed to the sleeker look of PineRidge's 45.

Read that mower manual good. Hogs are great tools.. but ya need to be safe with them.

Also.. pay attention to what your tractor and mower manuals tell you about engaging the pto. I like to engage the pto, and feather it in for about a second or so at just above idle rpm on my tractors, and then bring hem up to speed.. and when disengaging them.. bring engine to an idle, then disengage them.. don't have to feather on the disengage too much.. but do be at a low rpm or you will wear the pto brake out.... etc
