What digital camera do you have/want?

What lens(s) do you have/use.

Seems like lenses change almost as fast as cameras. I bought a 24-70mm/F2.8 L-series. Both the camera and lens are far better than the picture taker. I splurged a bit, but have been having fun.

OkieG, that is a VERY nice lens. I had a 135mm f2.0L. I have or I should say my wife has a 28-105mm Canon on her Rebel 2000. My goal is to either start with the DRebel or 10D and get perhaps a simple 50mm f1.8 and also either the kit lens on the Rebel or perhaps a lens like yours someday. I used a 28-70L and was incredibly impressed. Your right too, all the best equipment won't buy you great photos. You really have to work it. Out of the 34 years I've been photographing, I have maybe two of what I consider great shots.

There are so many great cameras out there. I am thinking about these 3, but it changes as more info comes in

1. Canon 10D
2. Canon 300D or Rebel
3. Sony DSC F-828

Olympus and Nikon keep entering the fray as well. I keep thinking Nikon will have a new D100 out in the not so distant future. I think that with the dumbed down Canon Rebel, it's just a matter of time before someone takes advantage of that position. In which case, Canon will release a firmware update that brings the Canon 300D closer to the Canon 10D in regards to features without raising the prices on new ones. Who knows the way things keep changing.

You replied to the effect above, but just to recap, you can't beat good glass. It just can't be understated. I would rather get good glass, and spend a little less on the body, than get ok glass and a high-end body.

I have tried my Sisters Nikon with a 28-300 lens with variable apeture. Does not compare to my 80-200/2.8. My 24-120 is variable apeture, but is a higher grade lens.

The Fuji Finepix S2 is really nice... Nikon body and mount though.

I have taken some really great pictures, especially the last few years. My wife has too. But... We burn through some film! On our Alaska trip a couple years ago, we took about 3000 frames. Out of that, we had about 300 slides we kept. But, for every "picture" we took, we shot at least three frames typically. Cneter exposure, over expose a stop, under expose a stop. Then, add taking the pictures from different angles of same subject, and working exposure, either through fstop or shutter speed. Different depth of field, ect. Angles of lighting... It's hard to get that great picture with a snapshot.

I have some full breeches of Humpback whales. But, I set my F100 on full motor drive, and shot 5 frames a second

Now, we shoot mostly slide film. Slide film has little to no latitude for exposure. Print film is pretty forgiving these days. You can be off by a couple stops and still get a good picture.

The nice thing about digital now is you can just delete the image. Shooting film, you don't know till you go through the time and expense of developing, in addition to the price of film itself. With digital, you have the initial expense of the memory.. After that, your set.

Have you tired Fuji's Velvia for transparencies? Your right, negative film has a much wider latitiude and it doesn't hurt to slightly over expose it. The Nikon 80-200mm f2.8 is a very nice lens. It's somewhat comparable to the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L. With digital, I'm more inclined to get a less expensive body because in no time, it will be discontinued and a "new and improved" model will replace it. With an SLR, your investment is with the lenses, not the body. The drawback can sometimes be that it pretty much means your going to stay dedicaed to a particular brand. I'm at a crossroads and could go either Nikon or Canon. I've had both in the past. Canon for the time being seems to have the upper hand in digital but I am sure the Nikon D100 is being targeted by Nikon for a upgrade and they in all likelyhood are addressing the Canon Rebel. The bonus is that the competitve enviroment is going to bring out better and less costly equipment for us all. Rat...

RaT, your short list matches mine. I currently have a Nikon 775 that misses TOO many shots.

One other contender is the Sigma SD9 & SD10 I am very interested to see where they end up.

Whats your take on them? Wonder if they come in Green?

I have mostly used Kodak film. I just have not expierimented enough with other film, partly since my results have been good with what I have used mostly...

With Nikon or Canon, if you change your mind, there is a good market out there for both used and new. Check out all the stuff just on Ebay!

I shot some film with a Canon high end film body, attached to two different lenses. One they called "Junior", it was so big they had a back pack for it. They were 500 and 600mm IS/USM lenses.. Way cool man, way cool /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Things do change so fast. It's like buying a PC. A hot system this week is mediocre in six months. I think a good 6mp camera though will work well for at least a couple years. For a pro, using one daily, maybe not. For an enthusiast, you could get a few years out of it.

And, the manufacturers will leap frog each other. The Nikon will probably upgrade soon. Then Canon will make another jump, then Nikon... Keep an eye on Fuji though. I know folks with the Finepix-S2 who really like it. One is a pro photographer. She really likes hers.

It is tough though, waiting for that break in technology and price.

Mike, I'm already on it. The SD 10 with the Foveon, it is very interesting. Figuring out what Sigma has in terms of tried and true lenses. I know the EX 70-300mm APO is considered very good.

Frank, I use Steves-digicam frequently. I really enjoy his very up beat way and enthusiasm. I think it's a great source.

Robert, those were the lenses I was referring to when talking about Canons telephoto's, I've never even touched one, only read articles about them and seen the results they produce. Wow, now I know someone who used one. I've heard the same about the Fuji S2. If you get the chance, take a roll of Velvia transparency, anything with green will be pretty dramatic. By the way, who does your processing? Rat...
