What digital camera do you have/want?

Robert--

I've had a D100 for about 14 months, started out thrilled with it and like it a lot more now. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif On top of being a robust body with a lot of flexibility built in, the price has come down considerably, and the firmware is more capable than it was when I got it. I'm sure that when the next round of Nikon bodies come out you'll be able to get a D100 for a great price, and especially with an understanding of their film bodies you'll be mightly pleased!!

I would be very interested to see what Nikon has been working on to perhaps replace the D100 or even to battle the lower DSLR market like the Canon Rebel. My needs for photography are much smaller today then before but I would still like the flexibilty of a SLR and the larger sensor size over all the P&S. The price has dropped and it is certainly competitve with the Canon 10D. I'm in a situation (which has been rare) to not own any lenses anymore. I am looking at everything and anything. I have owned a Nikon before and would not hesitate to have one again. I keep thinking that like computers, the digital cameras will get replaced somewhat frequently. Tell me what len(s) do you use? I have a Canon Powershot A70. Its point and shoot, plus will do shutter priority or aperture priority, or completely manual. I'm real happy with it. Its a 3.2 MP camera.

Cou;d take a while. as the dRebel seems to have caught the industry from a blindside. But then, it shouldn't take too long to cripple some code, and call it cheaper....

Time to resurrect this thread!

I HAD been casually researching an upgrade to add to my Nikon Coolpix 775. My daughters think nothig of a hundred or so shots when they go out for a walk. Poor thing, I think they ground it out (no zerks on it...)

So now to a new camera. I was actually leaning towards the Canon G5. Better than I had without breaking the bank. Then wifey saw them, and couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting the slr. (Of course, she already has plenty of fans on this site for insisting I could NOT get a tractor without a backhoe...) She reminded me that I only get the camera about .001% of the time, and she and the girls NEED the slr.

So I am pretty sure we will get the Digital Rebel. I am very pleased with the shots from it. It feels a lot beter than you'd expect. And the Wideangle on the kit lense is hard to touch, elsewhere. I thought about the 10D, but I smell an upgrade for it. Once we get into the lenses (all I have is minolta glass, now /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ) later I ight want a step up body.

Of course, the DR is full list everywhere. If they back off list the whole prosumer line will bottem out.

BTW I saw ritz has a 2mp for $11. And I bet they are making a profit on it. Whew!

SO far, the concensus at DP Review seems to go this way len's wise for the Rebel. Kit lens, 50mm f 1.8 and the 70-200mm f4 L. The 50mm is for low light yet a very high quality pictures in a very cheap lens at $60 or so. The kit lens is $99.00 for it's wide angle ability and of course, the L lens, a 70-200mm is about $500 minimum. I mention these lenses because they are the "bargain lenses" that are either very sharp 50mm & 70-200mm f4 or wide angle at a low cost, which is the kit lens.

I'm still thinking aboout the Sony DSC F-828 when it is available for review and the Canon Rebel. There are benefits to both. One is a bargain SLR and the other a high end P&S. My biggest dislike of all P&S is the inability to manage depth of field. With P&S, its difficult if not impossible to get a narrow DOF. With a SLR and say the 50 mm f1.8 (a 80mm equivalent after the 1.6X crop factor), DOF is very nice and control is at your hands. It makes a swell portrait lens or candid lens with available light. Keep me informed Mike as to your purchase plans. Rat...

"Good question David. Heres where I have experienced the lag. When taking a picture of a kid jumping in the pool and waving to you, your lucky to get the splash when the intent was to capture the kid waving. I don't know if it is soley focusing slowing it down or the exposure calculations as well."

Digicams use complex algorithms to "compute" the picture, I believe what you are experiencing is not shutter lag but the time it takes the computer in the camera to "solve" for the image, I could be wrong. The CCD sees the light but the computer converts it into an image, otherwise all you would get would be red, blue, green blotches, and then it is stored on your card. J

Do you have that problem when you push the shutter button half way down and PRE-FOCUS and then depress the button all the way down when you want to take the picture?

Also, if you set your camera to manual focus -- can you capture the image you want when you depress the shutter?

Mike, I have a deal for you. How about this nice little Minolta 600mm f4 APO. It lists for about $8000 but you can have it for $4000. Oh yeah, it's autofocus.
