I think we need to loosen our ties just a bit guys. Were talking walkie talkies not life and death. I do agree that its our responsibility to know the law. The law often has a lot of grey areas. Personally I have better things to worry about than if some one else is talking on the air with out a toy license. They didn't work for me. I wouldn't give you 75 cents for one. I rather doubt the FCC is writing fines for 10k on any recreational use of a GMRS radio. We have a lot of useless laws that go uninforced. A prime example of excessive government /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Dave

Yes, but this is not one of them. Like it or not, agree with it or not, anyone operating a GMRS radio without a license IS breaking Federal Law.

I find it disturbing that some seem to be advocating an attitude of "ahhh, just ignore it - it don't matter." Folks operating without a license may not get caught, and if they are, they may even escape a fine and get a warning instead. All that said, it still doesn't make violating the law "right."

I see - so you are "above the law." So, what other laws do you commonly violate? Do you "share" hunting license tags?? Do you own illegal firearms?? etc. etc.

Your disregard for the law just because YOU think you are so much smarter than those of us who do abide by it is egotistical AND offensive.

( Yes you need a license. I have reported a number of business to the FCC for using GMRS without a license. All have moved off gmrs.
( I didn't realize people bothered with the license these days? ) )

Do you need a licence to operate or maintain? I have an FCC licence for maintaining radios that I got years ago. It was a heck of a lot more difficult than just paying some dough. I had to test on laws and principals of electronis and radio. I was unaware that you needed a license to talk on the radio.

Why do you need a license? Can you interfere with others if you use it wrong or what? just wondering.

Hmm, I think I can come to a lot of conclusions based on your reply.

( Listen *****, I don't need a license cause I don't have a radio. So don't jump to conclusions. )

This is where your getting confused those cheap frs/grms combos are just junk handie talkes, but GMRS is NOT. GMRS is a FCC licensed radio service. GMRS license can operate UHF radio's upto 50 watts, run repeaters. In some area you have to pay to use GMRS repeaters, so It not just a joy walkie talkie. GMRS can be used in "limted" commerical applications, I use mine around the farm and its a pain in the **** have to listen to a couple of idiot kids playing call tones and yelling into the radio while I am trying to conduct valid and legal communications on a communications system I have several thousand dollars tied up in to use. WHy cant I use it, some parent thinks they and there kid is above the law.
RACES/REACT use GMRS radio for "life and death" work, some search and rescue groups use GMRS for "life and death" work. SO its is an issue and those cheap walkie talkes do require a license.
