Not enough
For me it was a doosey. i was taking off the tiller and it was stuck. A few yanks and it came free, right onto my big toe. In flip flops. Instantly the nail filled with blood, and now a few hours later the pain has set in and I'm pretty sure it's broken. I think it's time to go to the ER.

If they will let you in. My wife has got kidney stones and they said it was not priority during the Black Swan nonsense that is going on.

It was not today, but yesterday, that I was filling my tractor by pail with a fuel can because we have no power here yet, and it was running the pto generator. It was dark out and very windy, so I was getting more fuel on the tractor than in it. I also had a flashlight since it was 3 AM, and put it on the hood to light up the area.

That vibrated down as I was pouring in fuel...then whap...whap...whap, right into the engine fan it went.

I probably should have seen that coming.

Ouch. Heat a large sewing needle to red hot and poke a hole in your nail to let the blood out. It will relieve the pressure and pain.

You beat me to it, although I've always used a paper clip.
To the OP, hopefully that's all that it will take to make your toe feel better. Even if it's broken I doubt they will do more than tape it to the next one.

I wear steel toe work shoes around here ----seen too many guys get hurt going barefoot!

I don't wear steel toes around equipment, there've been too many people lose their toes because of "safety" boots. Then again I don't own a set of flip flops.

I like the composite toe safety shoes. They don't trap the foot (supposedly, I haven't tried it).

i know people who have done that too so i usually wear tennis shoes. but i was just out for my morning coffee and cigarette and wanted to pull off the tiller to assess the damage. done it many times before without issue, but it was stuck on something i couldn't see.

Not much to do other than the above, or use a small drill bit turned by your fingers. Just tape it to the next time. I broke a big toe thirty years ago trying to get a cantankerous dirt bike to start, jumped on the Kickstarter good and hard, and snagged it on the footpeg. It has arthritis in it something terrible.
I was wearing heavy boots, I hate to think of the outcome had I been in flip-flops.

I take an x-acto knife with a sharp tip....Put it on the nail and spin it until it goes through.....The release of the blood is also as good as the big "O".......OK, not quite

I think that many of us have done similar... either not quite properly dressed or in that one pair of jeans which we didn't want a grease stain on.

The heated needle or paper clip really does work best despite how it sounds. It melts its way through so you aren't enduring the extra agony of drilling or gouging through the fingernail. You will lose that nail either way, however.

Well...here's my dumb story for today. I clean out horse stable and starts to rain. Then I see garage front gutter is clogged so I fix that. By now my T shirt is soaked, but I have a heat gun in shop. Works great until it singes white shirt brown. What little hair I have left is soaked so heat gun dries then singes that.
When I go in the house smelling like horse poop with singed hair...if my wife asks "what happened to you"... I'm not responsible for what happens next.
Maybe it will grow back?
Tip: Don't use heat gun for hair dryer! 20200412_195213.jpg

Well, yes,yes it does but it is worth the fright. You have to let the pressure off that nail. It will feel 100 times better....

Or you can use your dremel with a very small drill bit in it. Same idea.

The absolute joy you will feel when it breaks thru will make it all worth it. Trust us on this..

A drill sounds terrifying to me vs the hot poker

The hot needle, the very tiny bit, the exacto knife point are all about the same, they all hurt a little by putting pressure on the nail, and it all will feel so good when it breaks thru.

I’ve never had any luck with the drilling/melting a hole idea. Maybe if you did it right away it would but later by this point the blood is dried.
