What else could it be if not the head gasket?

/ What else could it be if not the head gasket? #21
Since it is a multi layer type gasket , I would first try to peel it apart especially in the area's around those to cylinders . If not the gasket , I would venture to guess that it may be the head , But I really doubt it is the head . Being that it is #1 and #4 , I can't imagine it being the block or head or even the manifold . If the bad cylinders were side by side , then Yes Maybe . :confused3:
I would not know which way to go if Mine , Would likely go the $200 for head gasket and bite the bullet if it did not work . :2cents:

Whenever I would check a head for a crack and the block was right there I always checked it as well. I prefer magnetic particle over dye penetrant (personal taste). With overhead cam engines you can try turning the cam shaft by hand without the lifters or the cam shaft chain installed. When off the car and torqued down it should spin easily. If it doesn't then it's a sign that something is warped.
