What encourages you to buy a John Deere?

You're probably right. I'm just saying it almost turned me away because it looked like they were trying to drain the last little bit of life out of a dying calf. Made me wonder if they were a tractor company or a toy/home furnishings company.

I want to deal with a professional tractor company. In the end I still believe they are but I don't really like walking into a tractor dealership and seeing more toilet paper holders for sale than tractor parts, attachments, etc.

3 JD dealerships are within 15 miles of the culvert on my front driveway, one being 3 miles away! That pretty much seals the deal on what I buy with a motor in it around here. That and I don't want all my green and red neighbors heckling me when I doing hay with an orange tractor.

I didn't read all of the posts, but didn't see this mentioned.

try turning with the assistance of the breaks on an orange tractor, on some of theirs, its on the same side as the gas and you canot use the breaks to assist in turning unless you put both feet on the same side. Quite akward and unsafe.

The main reason why I have a JD is because the local tractor dealer (not JD) found one that was the right size and HP. I needed a new or recent 4x4 diesel tractor with factory cab that was both above 50HP and no wider than 76 inches. These specs netted me a 2-year-old 4720 with 600 hours (700 now) The new tractors dealer had on hand either didn't have enough HP or were too large.

Turns out I like this tractor, I intend to add a 125hp-150hp unit to the snow removal "fleet" next winter and it will likely be a JD.

Also, wife's favorite color is green :D

It is so encouraging to see so many people telling their stories about why they purchased a John Deere tractor. It is my hope that JD the company may see some of these responses and make an effort to connect with some of us. Question for all of you... If someone from the company reached out to connect with all of us, would you take it positively?

I haven't read through all the posts, but will add my reasons. In the fall of 2004 I went looking for a compact tractor. Went to a dealer that sold both Kubota and Deere. Basically said to the salesman that it might be nice to have a Deere, but I couldn't afford the green paint. So he priced a Kubota 3400 and a Deere 4310, both with loaders. It turned out that the Deere was MUCH cheaper than the Kubota. A friend had purchased a similar Kubota from another dealer at basically the same price so I knew it was not just an attempt to make me purchase the Deere. So I purchased the 4310 because it saved me over $1,000.

Last spring, I stopped at the dealers and half heartedly inquired about trading the 4310 in on something newer (the 4310 had just under 500 hours and I figured if I didn't look to trade it then I would keep it for at least 20 years). Much to my surprise they gave me a great price. However, I went to another Kubota dealer in the area and priced the Kubota again. Once again it was way high - this time more than $3,000. I was more than a bit surprised but once again found the Deere to be the most cost effective. So I now own a 3520 which has only 80 hours on it. Basically the same as the 4310 but a couple horsepower more.

BTW - a good friend of mine went to the same two dealers and did not get the same pricing as I did. He ended up buying a Kubota. Maybe it is just my good looks that got me such a good deal (that would be highly unlikely).

In a couple more years I may test the market again. If price is right it is always nice to have a new tractor. (smile)

The reason I bought JD after grown up with ford, IH, and NH was the dealer. When I bought my 790, the manager after a easy, no-hassel sale, of the dealer took it opon himself to deliver the tractor and made sure I was totally satisfied. I was lookn at rotary cutters a little bit later and the manager brought out two different models for me to demo to make sure that I got the one best suited for my tasks at hand. The deere prices were a little higher, but the service I got surpassed what I expect. I plan on keeping the tractor for a very long time and deere has an exellent parts and sevice program when the need comes.
