I don't want to open a big can of worms here, believe me. But aren't the engines made in China or Thailand? Where is the transmission, frame and sheet metal from?

Again, I'm not trying to down-talk Deere. I just want to know for certain. By the way, I have a New Holland that I'm sure uses a foreign engine.

Engines for which John Deere tractor? 2000 & 3000 series CUT's have a japanese made Yanmar engine in them. 4000 series CUT's & 5000 series Utility Tractors have a Deere engine built in Mexico. 6000 series and up have Deere engines built in the US.

Most transmissions - from the new 5M series on up are Deere units made in the US. Kanzaki in Japan makes the 2000 series transmissions. Sauer-Danfoss makes the transmissions in the new 3E, the 3020's and 4020's as well as the 3203 & 4105 models. The 5003 series (and new 5D & 5E models) are Deere designed manufactured in India, along with the rest of the tractor.

Deere does utilize a chinese plant for some cast-iron pieces, many here have commented on the Made in China cast into the loader masts on the newer 300 & 400 series loaders - and also now owns a chinese tractor company - but those tractors are all for far east distribution. As far as engines and transmissions are concerned - I cannot find any chinese or thai influence.

And in regards to your New Holland - if it is a compact utility tractor it is completely built by Shibaura in Japan. (as well as its sister, the Case) The Massey-Ferguson CUT's are all built by Iseki.

Anyway, I hope I was of some help.

Yes, you were quite helpful. I guess what had me confused was that I googled "Yanmar" and once at their website, went to the "about us" page. There were references to China & Thailand, and I simply made a guess that they were a Chinese based engine company.

As to my current tractor, it is a TC30. Yes the engine is a Shibura, but I believe the tractor itself is assembled here in the states.

In either case, thanks much for your answers.

The higher prices. I believe that if something is priced higher than its competitor, it must be because it's better. For example, look at the low quality gas that we're getting now compared to a month ago.
:D

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has noticed as gas prices have fallen, so has my fuel mileage. I haven't changed my driving style, habits, or routes, and have dropped about 2 mpg's in my car and 1.5 in my truck.

That's because it's gotten cold.

I disagree, for the simple reason that my mileage was dropping even during higher temps. Both vehicles have been serviced recently, no issues found to affect mileage. I use BP gasoline in both.

I was totally irrational. Grandpa had a Johnny Popper sitting next to the corn crib that we used to play on when us city slickers went to visit. Or maybe it was the fact that orange was not my favorite color. My 870 has some Yanmar plates on it. My dad did hay the old fashion way when he was a kid. He jumped on the hay on the wagon as they hand tossed it up there. Dad was not a farmer, he was a preachers kid. Farming was on the other side of the family. So I guess I had some sort of interest in JD as a kid. My uncle farmed with JD except for his combine which I think he said was MF. I think my other uncle farmed with JD but we did not visit that farm as much.

i always ran old farmall's as a kid, so i had no experience with deere. when i started looking for my tractor, i looked at jd and kubota, as they were the only brands within about 45 mins driving distance. i bought my 4115 to be used as a commercial backhoe, so downtime was a very important concern so i needed a dealer that was close by and with good parts availability and good hours. there are two jd dealers within 1/2 hour of me, both open late at least one day per week and on saturday mornings. kubota only had one dealer nearby, and they closed at 5pm every day and had very limited saturday hours.

the similar kubota had less power, a lesser quality backhoe, less ergonomic loader control, and it did not have the quick attach loader and backhoe that the jd had. since i was buying it to sit on 8+ hours per day, these things were very important also.

the kubota was quieter and smooth as silk. my jd is quite loud and vibrates quite a bit.

the kubota was almost 7000.00 cheaper than the JD.

and the number one reason i bought jd- the pedal design for the hydro. since i was to be using it primarily as a TLB, the steering brakes on the left and the seperate pedals for forward and reverse on the right just make sense. after all, i was at the time a heavy equipment operator and that is what i was used to. i have found that there is no other brand that could match the control and speed of the jd for my situation. i can finish grade up against a house with topsoil and never get off to rake, yet never touch the house with the bucket. i use the brakes and the hydro to do this. there is no way i could do it with the kubota, making more hand work for me and reducing productivity.

i will say this- i have looked at the newer small tractors (2720) to replace my 4115. thought some features are nice (cup holder, open station, one piece hoods), i think jd is dropping the ball on these models (mine has a better seat, better hydro line placement, rubber pads on the pedals, etc). they just look cheap. the extra power would be great though. if i were to replace my 4115, i would really be looking elsewhere because of this. kubota is catching up in a big way, IMHO.

History... experiences with JD growing up and recognizing that while; IH and Ford and Case all make good equipment - there was always just a small edge in quality to John Deere machines.

Nothing is free - and you could expect to pay more for JD - but, the long-term return was generally well worth the upfront investment.

I am still of the opinion that JD upholds that distinction.

The last tractor I purchased was a JD 3720. I have only owned Deeres but have used many others. I was shopping between New Holland, Case, Kubota and Deere. All had local dealers. The NH was the closest dealer. The JD dealer was the biggest and had the best hours and availability of models and parts.

I do like the green a lot better than the other colors, with blue coming in second. Silly reason to buy one or the other though :)
But the Case red was way too much. I sat on one on a very bright day. It gave me a headache. I find the JD green to be relaxing.

In the end, it was the features, quality of build, dealer. Like Rocco, I like the pedal arrangement much better on the JD. I liked the loader control better on the NH and Kubota.
But, I liked the sound of all of them better than the JD. I don't think my 3720 sounds very nice. I absolutely LOVE the sound of the big JD 4 banger in my 2355. It roars and I can run it without ear protection. I can't stand running my 3720 without protection. It runs smoothly though.

The eHydro works very well. I like the open station too. Adding arm rests helped a lot.

Mine has a backhoe and the mounting of the hoe was much better on the JD. I also liked the loader (300CX) better, over all.

There are very few company's that dont' have some parts made overseas, just likes like GM, Chrysler and Ford, but I still want to help American company's prosper as long as they have quality products, but I don't want to get off the subject matter.
