What Ever Happend To "Chore Coats"?

Try used clothing stores like Salvation Army outlets. They are known as Value Village up here. Or Frenchies because a "French" guy opened them. Frenchies brings in used clothes and sometime new from the US... leftovers from unclaimed airports, garment district etc. and sometimes they stock items...

This is a list of items over the past 6 months - great deals on all name brands.
LL Bean unlined jacket - new with tags: $4.00
Carhatt overalls tanned unlined: $7.00
Carhartt lined bibed overalls olive green with zippered legs - new with tags: $14.00
Numerous down jackets from eddie bauer, LL bean etc all for under 10 bucks.
All of my pants, summer shorts and shirts(levi, JCrew, LL Bean(some with flannel lining), ralph lauren etc are all purchased there. I haven't found a rip or stain on them. I even found several pairs of lightly worn LL Bean boots for around $8.

It is easy to buy too much... my wife asked me one day if I new how many shorts I had... No says me... 49 says she! I even found a couple of Carhartt shorts. My best find was a wool double breasted suit from Perry Ellis with tags - suggested retail was $899.00 US... my price was $16.00 fit perfect!!! From my years of buying I have about 8 LL Bean barn jackets, a dozen denim pants, at least 2 dozen shirts - dress to casual, lots of shorts and various jackets. Most of the work jackets/clothes I store in my workshop buildings... good luck.

"...thin skinned..." ?

Dude, if you can do your winter chores in Seminole County in just a blanket coat, you've got your furnace pretty well stoked...

I visited some kin in Chouteau one January...it took me till May to defrost...

T

:laughing: Haha! I failed to mention that I've got a vest on under it and some insulated "over-hauls" on as well! It's that danged wind chill that gets me! Oh! and Chouteau is farther north it's colder up there!:laughing:

Lloyd, at those prices I wouldn't shop anywhere else!

Here you go, Terry. Made by Dickies too and up to size 5X.
Denim Zip Front Chore Coat - Stone Washed | Men's Jackets & Coats | Dickies.com
No charge.

Well....that is EXACTLY what I was looking for....maybe my server out here in West Africa kept me from finding their site when I searched for it...

Hmmmmmm....$60 for a Dickies chore coat....

I think I'll just buy a couple more BDU jackets....at $25 apiece for 60/40 in ripstop, they fill the bill.

I still have some that spent 3 years in Iraq and are still going strong...

I just miss the "old time" stuff...

...tho I don't FEEL old, I used to call jeans "dungaree's" and I think my Mom has a pic of me in engineers boots, straight-leg Levi's, a black pocket tee with a deck of Camels rolled up in the sleeve and a cool black beret...they went with the bike...

...GAWD what a dork....:D

Terry, I used to love the blue nylon flight jackets with the fake fur collar for my work jackets. They don't take heat worth a flip, so if you drop your see-gar ashes on them, they may have some nice neat melted vent holes. I used to find those things at army-navy stores and later at Burlington Coat Factory for around $19. Lately, I came across a drab olive green work jacket lightly lined at Walmart. They had them on sale after the season was over a couple of years ago and I got one for around $10. I told my neighbor about them and by the time he went there, they had marked them down to $5 each. The one I am currently using has been washed 5 or 6 times by my wife and this morning she threatened to wash it again since it is in the target zone while I crawl under my tractor with a greasegun. It has that nice greenish-black shiny area around my belly. Perfect!

Yep. That coat has been hunting, fishing, numerous personal campouts, numerous Boy Scout campout, multiple week long Scout summer camps, out on the tractor, protected the truck seats from wet muddy dogs. It is 10 years old and still in great shape.

Lloyd mentioned something I should have thought of; try the local thrift store. I have bought stuff from our local stores, for crawling under cars ect.

Or, again, the local feed/supply store.

WOW... $90 for a coat to wear while crawling under the tractor....

The boys at the Feed Store would take away my membership card...

Try Men's Clothing: Shirts, Pants, Coveralls At Sportsman's Guide

They can have stuff that can be really good or really junk depending on your viewpoint. And it comes and goes. If you see it today you likely will not see it tomorrow. :D Unless it is the real junk that he cannot sell. :)

I bought a bunch of wool coats from them back in the 90's. Military surplus stuff from Switzerland and Poland. The Swiss coat is good enough to wear in polite society. :D The Polish one looks like a military surplus jacket. Both will keep you warm. I think I paid $20 for them. I bought a couple of each.

Funny thing was one day I was wearing the Swiss coat to work and I stopped to get a bagel and coffee. A guy in front of me was wearing the same Swiss coat. I know were he shops and vice versa. :D:D:D

We have a Habitat for Humanity organization in town. They used to be pretty good but they have grown from one store to THREE. Their prices have gone up as well. And from what I have heard the management thinks they are running a large company, has raised prices to LL Bean and REI levels, and treats employees like work shop slaves.

We do not do business with them any more. :D There is another charity in town for the county PTA which we use. They have lots of clothes and priced right.

I just brought some chore coats back from the wife's side of the family. It was free but not worth the price. My wife's grand pa use to wear the coats. He died the day after Thanksgiving over a decade ago. The family finally was getting rid of his coats. Figured I could use some of them on the tractor. The old farmer would approve. Wish he was here though. So much to ask him. So much to learn.....

Later,
Dan

Local Army/Navy surplus store is a good place too. Didn't think of that earlier either. I also have a Army field jacket with the removable liner.

I think I'll just buy a couple more BDU jackets....at $25 apiece for 60/40 in ripstop, they fill the bill.

I still have some that spent 3 years in Iraq and are still going strong...

I thought he was only interested in an unlined one and that one has a lining. I get several e-mails a week from Dickies because I wear Dickies coveralls nearly all the time.

Oh! REAEAEAEALLLLYYY!!!

"Who'da thunkit":laughing::laughing:

Sorry Bird, couldn't resist!:D
