good point mark, But I live in the middle of no where and my nearest neighbor is 3 miles away. I don't have to worry about regs too much, I could build a nuclear silo and no one would know. I have already had the water tested and it is good water....

Yeah, know what you mean,,I live in the middle of no where too,,no public water,,,so,,if government won't supply me with public water,at a cost of their choosing of course,,than they better not tell me what water to drink.
This big brother stuff, works both ways. thingy

I may be womewhat late in replying to this thread, however will add my layout to the thread. I have and currently use a spring box, I am familar with some of the old spring boxes, however this is what I now have. Aprox 6 yards from my house was a rock formation with spring water seepage from several location. I drilled a hole into the rock formation 1 3/4 inches and tapped into the water and then concreted the rest of the water seepage. I run this into a 1500 gallon septic tank with an overflow, i then laid a pump down and run the pipe aprox 6 yards to my home I placed the pressure tank in my basement. The pump was a two hp since it had to pump up a hill and then the distance involved. I installed a freeze free spicket at the garden and also at the house, another one for the watering of cattle aprox 250 yards from the house and the spring. No varmits of any kind can get into my box however they can still drink from the overflow,This is a real cold spring and provides me with a storage capacity of 15oo gallons I plumbed my house so that i could use the spring or city water or another well located close to the house that has extremely hard water all one needs is cutoff valves placed at appropiate locations. I have had no trouble with this spring box for 20 years even though I can not use it as our forefathers did. This is for my drinking water, laundry and watering of live stock. I used 1 and 3/4 pipe and also placed all electric wires 24 to 30 inches deep inside of pvc also.
This may be of some help, it works for me and the expense was well worth the results, i just do not like a lot of clorine in my water.
I will sign this as just a west virginia McGiver. I have seen several constructed on a small scale that was gravity flow and still had decent water pressue boxes was not as larage. with auto washers, dishwashers we can use a lot of water today.

Just to give you an idea of how each area of the country is so different.

Spring fed water, using spring boxes and reservoirs are very common and actually prefered to wells here in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

We call it "gravity water" in the mountains. As in "city water", "well water", and "gravity water". You'll actually see it listed that way in property descriptions in the real estate magazines.

You put a 4" pvc pipe into a good spring as high up on the mountain as you can get, run that into the spring box, then into your reservior, and finish up with whatever run length you need of 1" "funny pipe" pvc to the house. Height of your reservior above the house determines your water pressure. No pumps, no bills, and no hassles during power outages.

You can go into our local Lowes and buy pre-fabbed food grade plastic spring boxes and holding reserviors up to 350 gallons made by local manufacturers, sitting on the top shelves of the the plumbing racks just like any other SKU in the store.

If you'd like, I can get you some contact info for our local companies, and I am sure they would be happy to UPS you a "real" modern day spring box that doesn't involve the hassle of fabricating and experimenting from scratch.

Thanks
Bill

Yep,me and my grand pa did that one summer when I was young,,,spring above cistern,,big concrete made in the ground cystern,,it was probably 300-400 ft above house and 1/4 mile or so away,,you talk about water pressure,,he musta had some kind of regulator for inside house,,had to have something, can't remember,,but outside at a spigot above house, that water hose would take the paint of a car,,,and that spring in dry summer was just barely a trickle,,,big cistern,,never remember it running out,,,course we had another well, and not all these modern water users,,,,,thingy

Use a septic tank for water storage.

And for this project I would certainly recommend not cutting any corners by looking for a 'previously owned' septic tank as well.. Go NEW all the way.. LOL
