What fuel mileage are you getting?

2010 F-150 4x4, 4-door, 5.4 Litre.
If I drive it sensibly on highway type venture (55 mph, no jab gassing), I can get 23+ mpg out of it as reported by the trip computer. Short trip driving "around town" (a hilly town at that), it drops considerably.....summer time=15-16.....winter time=14=15. Compared to the 2000 Dodge Dakota, 4.7 Litre I had prior to the Ford.....I am real pleased with what the Ford is doing.......the Dakota was a gas hog for whatever reason.

I have a friend that has a 2003 Lincoln Navigator.....complained about the terrible gas mileage it was getting. He just recently was in need for new tires for it....I did some on-line tire shopping for him. Found that the tires that were on the vehicle were oversized....considering the hilly area we live in, I convinced him that he should put the correct size tires on it with fuel mileage in mind. So far....he thinks it was a favorable move.

The tire size is not really all that far from stock. The height is slightly shorter, less than an inch shorter. The width is off but not that much, stock is 275 and i'm running 305 which 3cm wider or about 1.25'' wider. I checked my speedometer by gps and its real close, indicates 65 mph and actual is 63-64 mph. Pressure is 44 psi all the way around. i almost always run pressures a little high on vehicles, as a cyclist i understand rolling resistance. The fun pedal isn't all that fun in this truck, it weighs in around 6000# with the 5.4L which is not under powered but won't rip the tires up either. I drive THIS truck really easy and my wife takes easy too. It does have 4x4, it also has the 4 auto mode which it is in now because of winter but this summer was in 2wd with no really noticeable difference. I was wondering what else it could be. We live in the very flat prairies. I don't know the the spark plug were last changed, could that effect it that much. Obviously no codes are showing, idles great, no engine hesitation.

Occassionally you get an engine that just sucks gas no matter what. I had a company truck (FORD)with 400 CI engine in it in 1990 wouldnt pull the hat off your head and only got 10MPG on highway. Took it to the dealer several times to check it and nothing was wrong with it. I ran into a guy once at the dealer with the exact same truck and he got 18MPG and said it was the strongest pulling truck he ever had. He pulled a 38 foot GN with it loaded all the time. Mine literally wouldnt spin a tire on wet pavement.
My Chevy 1500 Z71 will get up to 22 MPG on highway in winter (no AC running) but averages about 18 in the summer. I recently used it to pull my 20 foot car hauler with my LS P7010 tractor on it on a 70 mile trip one way and it got 10 loaded and 18 empty running 55MPH loaded and 70 MPH empty. Thats pulling close to 12,000 pounds of load .

I bought a used 2007 expedition el about 9 months ago. All i seem to get is about 13 mpg at best. The only thing that is not stock is the 305/45/22 tires. Should i be doing better? 13 mpg is highway driving 110 kph or 65 mph. I'd like to blame my driving style but my wife gets the same. The air and fuel filters were changed not too long ago. Should i be concerned? Any suggestions? I love the truck, its not going anywhere.

I think you are doing pretty good getting 13 out of it.

2012 F150 XLT Supercab 4x4 with 5.0 getting around 16 to 18 local driving. On one highway trip I was pulling an 18' (with 30 inch beaver tail) trailer with a Kubota B3030 cab & loader. Don't recall exactly but I think I was in the 11-12 mpg area.
The other road trip I was pulling a new 6x12 CAM Superline dump trailer with a 73" Erskine snow blower home. I think I was in the 13-14 neighborhood on that trip. All figures are from the onboard computer's average MPG for those trips.

You are more than welcome to take it. The last one I had with Obama and Government Motors logo got pulled and a letter sent to me by the powers that be here. They said some Nanny complained that it was not fair to bash GM and it was also too political. Guess some cant handle the truth. Its a well know fact the tax payers own 60% or 500 million shares of GM stock that was purchased for $35 per share and is today worth about $22. We got taken on that deal and mark my words that we are not done with GM. They will be bankrupt again in less than 10 years.

I explained that it was not bashing when its the truth but that fell on deaf ears.

Chris, no disrespect, but I think folks dont mind your opinion on the matter and in fact a large majority may agree. It is the constant interjecting of this opinion into threads, especially when it is not relevant to the topic at hand, that may get people peeved. I am able to block it out and even agree with a lot of your views, but some folks lack this ability. I read your posts due to the fact you provide solid and intelligent advice. I simply skip over the gm stuff as it has grown tiresome. To the op, get your converter checked. Also, put the factory tires back on. I feel you will see a decent increase.

We had a 06 2wd and 4.6 motor, we loved that rig, I used it to haul our trail ridn jeep to superlift offroad park in Hot Springs AR and Flatnasty in Jadwin MO. My wife drove it 99% of the time in town going to work and hauling the kids around. If memory serves me right, it got 14-16 in town, 19 on the highway and around 12 towing. I dont know the miles on your rig,but as someone stated, I would check into the cat converter and muffler. LUTT

I can't find the epa site but cars.com said it was rated for 14/20mpg but that was wishful thinking.

I put a motor in a 06 F150 5.4 supercrew 4x4 and the computer showed it getting 9-10MPG.

I wouldn't worry about the plug wires too much, if they were an issue it probably wouldn't be running right/ possibly giving a code. 13 does seem a little low though. The closest comparison I have is a '97 suburban with 5.7 4wd and 3.73 rearend. I don't hot-rod it, but definitely don't drive like a granny, actually the wife drives it most of the time and she has pretty similar habits and I average about 14.5-15. I check all of my vehicles almost every fillup by dividing the miles driven by the gallons taken to fill up without topping off. I do this to help indicate an issue if one ever arises.

As others have stated, if you do primarily highway driving- check the TC lockup. As another example, I have a '96 dodge ram 2500 4x4 ext. cab with a 5.9L gas and 3.55 gears. I get about 11 mpg empty, which is closer to 12 actually because of larger tires. If I tow anything substantial (5k or greater) I drop to about 8mpg. I once had the ceramic element in the cat dislodge and turn sideways. Truck would barely move, would only go 25mph and was working an awful lot. Got it home and hollowed out the cat temporarily, a couple months later put on a new cat. I have noticed this truck's mpg drop slightly, when I bought it I would get about 14-15 out of it. It could be because of larger tires and/ or age.
