What Happened to Bird?

Not yet, but it does have a separate breaker panel, good insulation, lots of 120 volt electric outlets (even in the ceiling), and three 230 volt outlets, including one right under that north window. I figure an 18,000 BTU 230 volt window unit ought to do the job just fne.

Bird, glad to see you are settling into your new place. Moving is a funny situation. It's very exciting when you close on the perfect home, but when moving day is over and exhaustion sets in it's makes you wonder what you were so excited about /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. Enjoy that shop, I'm jealous /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif!

Nice place you have Bird. Wished mine looked like that. My garage is filled with little boy treasures. Wood scraps, tonka toys and a frig with treats. It's a rough life. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Congrats on your new place. Enjoy.

Welcome back, Bird.
My condolenses on your loss. That and the move are really stressful.
You need to take it easy in that nice shop of yours. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I sure like the breezeway and the loft in your shop. The knotty pine is the way I'd do it too.
Also, congrats on your new house.

Bird, look for a hotel/motel type unit. Should be plenty of 'em around for very little money, and you get hot and cold from one unit, especially since the shop is insulated. Could be an easy deal way to go...............

Dave, I know the kind you're talking about, but all the ones I've seen were "through the wall" type units and, I think, too wide unless I did some major carpentry. And while the motel type units are great for both heat and cooling (that's also what's in every room of the nursing home where my mother is), it will probably be a rare occasion when I need heat in that shop, so my thinking is that there are plenty of portable electric heaters available that would work just fine. Right now, I'm leaning toward the Whirlpool ACQ189XR for cooling, but haven't made a final decision yet. Thanks for the suggestion, and I'd welcome any others; might find a better way.

I changed my mind today and bought a Whirlpool ACE124XR which is both heating and cooling, but I don't know yet when I'll have time to do the installation.

Bird, would that happen to be the unit that Lowes sells? I had to replace one of our window units early this summer and looked at the Whirlpool selection at Lowes. If I remember right, they had a heating/cooling combo unit that was 18,000 cooling BTU's and 15,000 heating BTU's. I ended up buying just the 17,800 BTU Whirlpool AC unit since we heat with the little propane wall heaters. I don't know anyone who has used the combo units for heat, so I will be curious to see how yours does in your shop. Your Texas winters are almost as bad as ours in Mississippi /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

Lawrence, I first thought I was going to buy the ACQ189XR just for cooling because I wanted a 230 volt unit and plenty of cooling capacity (17,800 BTU). I had inquired about it at the Lowe's in Lewisville and they were sold out of room air-conditioners for the season (I didn't ask if they'd special order one for me). But yesterday I was in the Lowe's in Denton and noticed they still had several units, including three of the ACE124XR models (11,400 BTU cooling and 11,700 BTU heating). You'll notice the MSRP is $599 and Lowe's price was $478 plus tax. Whirlpool says it's to heat and cool up to 650 sq. ft. and I've got about 525 sq. ft., so we'll see how it does. I had looked once at some units at Home Depot that were LG brand which I know nothing about, and the prices were higher. I had also looked at one Sears store, but they didn't have anything in stock in a size I wanted.
