Why would a catfish sit still long enough for a heron to peck and do that much damage? That catfish is really gnawed up. I think it would be something that could hold it and eat at it until it got away. Possibly an otter? I don't know much about turtles...they can do that much damage to a large live fish?

I like that pic of the heron & turtle, I think that turtle might have bit off more than he can chew :D :p

I would say the catfish was snagged by a coon as usually the turtle will bite a big hunk out and the fish gets away as the turtle starts chewing the chunk. I had a hole stringer of catfish ate by a big turtle one night when camping, nothing but heads left of the cats. several of which were still pumping water through the gills! this was 20 yrs ago or better now. early 80's

If you have a turtle problem they're easy to catch. You need a piece of styrofoam about 1 foot square, a piece of 1/4" clothesline or such about 10 feet long, a good ole mousetrap, and some baling wire. Mount the mousetrap (drill hole) on the styrofoam with a piece of wire, tie the rope to the mousetrap, and put a minnow on the mousetrap for bait. Throw the trap assembly upside down into the pond and tie off the rope. Turtle will swim under the styrofoam, go after the minnow and the trap will get its head. Make soup or whatever but turtle won't be eating your fish anymore.

Not to hijack the thread, are turtles really that bad?I just stocked 2 ponds and in one the turtles will come to the feed, too small to eat but want the fish more than the turtles.

I have mud turtles, put them in the ponds on purpose. They are fun to watch, but very shy. I have never had an issue with them. Snappers on the other hand If I find them they're evicted, usually to a swamp a few miles away.

We have 4-5 leatherbacks in our pond. They just hang out on logs and dive in whenever they see you. they are not a big deal at all.

Like others have mentioned, whenever I find out that we have a snapper in the pond, he gets caught and removed. I don't think that they can clean out a pond but they will go after just about any size fish.
