What happened to Soundguy?

Actually the article understates 8N production numbers by nearly 80,000 units. On the other hand the article is now 29 years old. The number of functional 8N tractors today is surely much lower now than then and equally impossible to accurately quantify as in 1990.

Yeah, not sure how we could even get close on an accurate number still running. I'll stick with less than 10%. Nothing to do with their value, just simple mathematics. :)

Just so I don't get buried in the archives of 8N haters, I'll say this.

I've done something while operating an 8N that no one here has done, including Soundguy. Got stopped by a cop for speeding....

That could happen in a school zone I imagine. Did you claim ignorance because you lacked a speedometer?

I was 8 years old. I simply apologized. Not in a school zone.

I may have told this story before, I apologize if so.

Dad had a hog farm. Fattened 500+ per year. Fed them bulk pelleted complete ration. My job on Saturdays was to drive the 8N to town with a two wheel trailer made from the rear half of an old Dodge pickup. The local grain elevator sold the bulk feed. I'd drive onto the scales, get weighed, pull around to the back where they loaded the trailer using the elevator leg. Drive back onto the scales and weigh, head for home. Never getting off the tractor.

Dad knew how long it would take me to make the 6 mile roundtrip. When I'd get back to the farm he'd be standing at one of the pen gates waiting to let me in. I'd park beside the feeder with the top open. He's scoop off the feed. Repeat the procedure.

One trip as I drove thru the gate with a load Dad said "what took you so long?" I said I got stopped. When I parked by the feeder he asked "what did you say?" I said I got stopped. "Who stopped you?" I said the Town Marshal. "What did he stop you for?" I said speeding. Dad tossed the shovel onto the load of feed and as he walked away he said "You stay here". He got in the pickup and left. About 20 minutes later he came back. I was sitting on the tractor waiting. As he crawled onto the trailer he said "Don't worry about that, it won't happen again." The Marshal never bothered me anymore. I suspect Dad had a coming to Jesus meeting with the Marshal.

Our old 8N had an Over and Under addition to the trans. It would run somewhere around 25mph once wound out in high gear. I'd hit that speed 4 blocks away from the Feed Store as I would leave town. Just as I hit full speed the marshal pulled up beside me in his car and waved me to stop. He told me I was speeding and better slow it down. I'm sure the little 8N and trailer looked like it was going much beyond the 25mph speed limit since most tractors wouldn't go that fast. I'm also sure the Marshal also forever regretted his decision to stop me that day. :)

That has gotta be the best story I’ve heard in a long time!
