Mike, if I may throw my .02 and expand my thoughts on your post.

Not speaking to/about anyone here but in general I've heard people effectively cheering that prices have gone down to $2.70 or so. That's still a lot higher than it was prior to the price jump.
I don't have the "why's" of this phenomenon but it seems that the oil companies jack the prices up high then drop about 1/2 of the increase. People in general are happy to see the price drop but don't necessarily pay attention to the fact they're paying a lot more than they were a month or year ago. Take a look at these graphs It shows that as of 8/22 prices are $1.22 more than they were a year ago.

Maybe if we all did this for a week or so, gas would be so plentiful they would be begging us to take it.

I agree... we need to Boycott. I remember the 70's when gas was 0.15 a gallon when it went to .050 a gallon people boycotted and the Gas War was on... sold at 0.05 to 0.07 per gallon. Only 30 years ago and people have forgotten the POWER of Boycotting!!

Until we take charge... they will continue to Gouge us and get their rewards because people lay down and take it rather than stand up and fight. This goes for all walks of life including politics, fuel, food and such.

Boycotting sounds wonderful, but for most of us we gotta have that gas to get to work. I look forward to the day we don't need it, and then OPEC and the oil companies can choke on what they have left.

Jim....... I don't mean to offend you, but either your picture is very deceiving and you are much older than you look, or your memory has failed terribly. I know that I am old enough to be your father, if not your grandfather and I don't ever remember gas being sold for 15 cents per gallon in the 1970's, nor do I remember gas wars where it was sold for 5 - 7 cents per gallon. I can honestly say that the gasoline prices in the 1950's were higher than that. Here is a comparison price chart from 1950 - 2004.

That doesn't work everywhere. Would you care to share in the legal expenses from the ice storm of 1998? The portable generator market was as you describe, yet when prices had to go up to cover cost, in steps the AG's office and accusations of "price gouging". Which form can we write-off all of that lost agony and heart-ache?
And I still don't see where it's ethical to raise prices on current stock to cover "anticipated increases".

Hi Junkman,
I am not offended to start with. I do remember these prices in Westminster, SC and all the way into Virginia. I will be glad to look at the chart. I am nearly 49 years old and have raised 4 children. Thanks for the compliments on the age. I feel my age is showing a lot lately. See my project here at TBN and see some of the latest pics. As far as my memory... it has failed me before but I remember this well because of my first brand new truck I purchased in 1974. The was a gas station in town at that time called "Globe" and they did sell it for these prices giving Shell & Texaco a hard time keeping their prices down. There were large signs that said "Gas War". Maybe it was regional but it did happen here in our small town.

Junk, I did see .19 gas back in 73 at during a gas war. You remember those ? Back when the law of supply and demand worked in the gas industry. Now with just 2 or 3 corps controlling almost all the oil the law of supply and demand is " We have all the supply and can demand what we want." All the oil corpos have to worry about is ripping us off just enough to keep below the riot point.

The Merit gas station at Webster Square Worcester 1971 was selling regular at $.27 a gallon. I remember those days very well.

I noticed the local station was down to $2.63 this morning. How low will it go?? I hear there is another storm brewing so we may be in for another crisis very soon.
