OMG your so right. its at 24 on the scale in the video. In my opinion the first'pro' didnt cut as deep as I would. and the second guy cutting was way to small a cut.. But they said it was great and good.the second guys cut looked more like a gash. Im so surprised they let this go on tv as it was.but what do I know. lol i would have been in shorts and sneakers...
Chopped, I 'm sorry it's been too long to remember what the guy did wrong. A different episode shows the right way to do it. Starts about half way thru: Damaged Clapboards, Felling Trees | Ask TOH Episodes | Ask This Old House TV | This Old House On the second tree, I would have made the face cut a little deeper.
I mark the bar with a Sharpie pen at 18" so I can use the saw to measure the firewood length. Works especially well with my arborist (a.k.a. "top handle") saw which is light and quick & easy to handle.

I have been watching TOH since 1979 yes 35 years, EVERY episode. What I love about the show is seeing from the start to finishing the project in 10 to 15 weeks and the progress from one week to another. I spent seven years fixing up an Old house and can appreciate all the work that is involved. Seven years of replacing all the windows, two bathrooms, two kitchens, heating system, rewiring the entire house, removing horsehair plaster wall, etc. etc. most of all the work done by myself with my wife and family and friends helping. All this while working a full-time job and a volunteer firefighter, it was nonstop, it was before kids!

I enjoy seeing the craftsmanship brought by the Silva brothers to the project. Are some of the projects over the top, yes, but I still enjoy the show, it's nice to watch people spend their money. How many shows have been on the air for 35 years, someone must be watching the show to stay on the air that long.

.... but to me they just jumped the shark, literally, when they had one of the fishermen from Deadlist Catch as a guest. I hope that this never happens again, I really dont care what a crab fisherman thinks about foundation construction!:mur:

I saw this episode too and it's beyond me why they had this guy on the show. When they introduced him, I thought that maybe he had a bunch of remodeling / restoration experience that he was going to share but that wasn't the case. It was pretty obvious that he was more of an amateur than I am when it comes to those things. And when the showed him sneaking away for a smoke break, that was a new low for the show! I have to wonder if the Deadliest Catch people paid to have that guy on the show.

Overall I like the show but everyone is right that it doesn't show anything that's even remotely affordable for us average folks. A lot of the projects they do are in super-expensive areas of the country so the people buy a "fixer-upper" for $750k and then spend another several hundred thousand dollars for rehab. A little rich for my blood.

Our local PBS station pairs TOH with "Ask This Old House". It's a decent show with some good "how to tips", but I hate the segment where they show some product and the guys are supposed to "guess" what it is. They are trying to be funny and don't even come close. If they would just jump right into what the odd tool is for they would have time to put another how-to segment in the half-hour show.

Even though they also do expensive projects, I like "Hometime" a lot better.

I remember an episode about a guy named Kevin, as I recall, and his wife buying an old house in Salem, MA. Kevin simply wanted a "place to eat, a place to sleep, and a place to watch TV". The total cost of the project was well over a million dollars and rising fast. I don't know about the rest of you , but a million bucks is well beyond my price range. They have simply priced themselves out of the realistic range.

I just finished the cottage show.
And the basement has a fully contained septic and also a geo thermal heater. Amazing in this area that a house can be fully heated by geo thermal. But when I see the plumbing etc I think about down the road in 15 maybe only 10 years and how somethings gonna break. etc. Yet they asked about maint and they said the septic only needs a professional check up once a year. and the water would only need the salt checked one a year. HMM Unreal to have the guts to make that statement. Oh and also they said they have a brand new well. the other one was tested at 30 gsllons a minute, and about 160 feet if i remember rightly.but very rusty. perhaps this is from the well sitting idle for over a year? who knows.Around my parts they would have just drudged the well out and been good to go.
Amazingly the homeowner showed up at the end and he didnt look all that thrilled overall.
Again not to knock the work done but really. and inlaw house for aging parents? needs all this?
still got me guessing on the deadliest catch guy being on one.He dis say he was a longtime 'friend'

Bob Vila was definitely a tool box! Norm on the other hand I never get tired of watching.

I agree I think they should have realized that and made him the star of the show. But in reality I think they had to have someone who was more of a 'nerd' type. But Norm was/is a good explainer ..

TOH on PBS is full of "commercials" in the form of program "sponsors" and product placement. There are a few minutes at the start and a few minutes at the end of the program to thank those "sponsors". You think those guys drive the brand of truck they drive by random choice? There are lots of promo tools during the show.

It's all advertising but dressed up a little different.

Anyone remember the "HH Richardson" house just outside of Boston? That was a good one but as i recall there was a legal issue preventing PBS from ever airing it again?
