I dont make $70/hour!! Buts thats what it costs for an hour of my time. It covers fuel for the truck, office , cell phone , fuel, computer, my pay, benefits, part of it is for my support staff in another office. So its expensive. All government is.

Yup its all cost of sales or at least cost of doing business day to day comes out of someones pocket somewhere goobermint or private. Doesn't give a license to steal or cheat but it is a fact of life.

Some of these charges you guys are mentioning like $700 for just a permit for a pole that is insane I would be pissed too.

Just wait till you hear this. In my small town of like 50 people (actual intown pop), we opted out of county inspections and permits! You can actually build a house in the town limit (if your in the county you have to follow permitting laws) and not have a single inspection or really have to build to any codes! Now that does not mean if you need a loan your bank wont require inspections.

But you can drill a well have your AC repaired/replace, reframe, move walls, add on, reroof, put new carpet in whatever and never need a permit. No inspector or county person will ever come and stop a job, they have NO authority inside the town limit, which is only like a 1 mile diameter circle.

Imagine my surprise, i did not find this out till after i had either bought the house or put offer on it? I did not have to permit the rewire, the reroof, any interior changes, or new AC etc. Some places go crazy and almost make new fixtures require a permit if they catch you doing something else!

Bad thing about permits is its a contract with the tax assessor. Its not like you can say "that was here when I bought the place" or "what add on's?" its there forever.

The permit for my upcoming ~2,000 SF house will cost ~$6,500. It's so high that they now have an online permit fee calculator.

Fire Protection Fee $152
Park Maintenance Fee $252
Transportation Impact Fee $5,372 (yep FIVE THOUSAND BUCKS)

... plus the actual "Permit Fee" etc.

When I built my current house ~1991 the fee was ~$300 ... you didn't even think about it, you just went down & paid your reasonable fee & began building. I honestly think this is one of many ways anti-progress folks are stymieing progress/construction. But, think about it - what this will really do is affect poor people even more. Richer people won't be bothered by a high permit fee; some less-wealthy people may have to just forgo building altogether.
