Re: What has been the worst car you\'ve owned?

I ordered a completely loaded 1993 Chevrolet 4X4 crew cab with the 6.5 turbo diesel I outfitted it with custom full length welded steps, front and rear brush bumpers, sprayed in bed liner, huge in bed tool box and a brahma camper shell. By the time I got thru I had almost 40K in it. The transfer case would not stay in gear going up hill in 4wd, it would slip into neutral and leave you scrambling backwards in a hurry. I owned it for 380 days of that it was in the dealer being worked on every other week for 185 of those days. I took it to every dealer in town and they all had their try at fixing it, finally at the last dealer they locked it up in their service department and called me refusing to return it sighting safety issues and told me to come meet with the regional rep on Monday. I figured at last they are finally getting serious and would be giving me a new truck WRONG!!! I met with the regional rep and he slipped a check across the desk for $24,000, I produced copies of invoices for all the custom metal and everything showing him that I had almost $40K in it. Heres the grand finale folks and the reason as long as I live I will NEVER own another GM product. He said they had to take some off for depreciation since it was over a year old and if I wanted to do better than their offer I would have to sue GM. Now all I was asking for was for them to replace the vehicle with one that worked, ain't that a bust in the chops. I went to a Lemon law attorney and he assured me that he could get every penny out of it and it wouldn't cost me a dime as the settlement would cover court cost as well BUT I would have to stop using the vehicle and lock it up in a storage building for at least 2 years as GM had figured out a way to slow the justice system down on Lemon law proceedings. I'm not a rich man and this was my daily commuter and I've never been in court in my life to sue someone or otherwise. I decided not to persue it took the $24,000 and got on with my life but as long as I live I'll relate this story to everyone that will listen and I'll never own another GM product.
I now own a 99 F350 4x4 V10 gas engine but equiped the exact same way otherwise it has 114,000 miles on it and to date other then regular service it has never been in the shop.

A 1961 Cadillac Limousine, but that's a long story....

(and to be fair, the problems really weren't the car's fault...)

Almost hate to admit this. But I bought a new 1981 Chevy Citation during the 70's/80's gas crunch. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif What a loser that was. Haven't seen one in years and doubt there are any on the road anymore. Kept it less than a year and got rid of it.

Re: What has been the worst car you\'ve owned?

Worse truck/car was a Chevy K2500 4x4 with the 6.5L Turbo Diesel and 5 speed manual tranny.

It left me on the side of the road every six months for three years running.

One clutch.
One Rebuilt tranny.
At least two hydrualic clutch pump/dohickeys.
One fuel problem common to GM 6.5L diesels.

The thing would fail June/July and November/December.

I bought a Ford 350 on 12/1/2001. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It was time for the truck to leave me sitting and I was tired of pouring money into the thing.

The irony was that I bought that truck to last me 10 years. It never towed a thing either. I figured with the engine and the tranny I would never have a problem. Sold it with around 70,000 miles.

Current truck has not had one problem. Course I'm jinxing myself saying it... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: What has been the worst car you\'ve owned?

I've heard it said that over 85% of Chevy trucks made in the last 20 years are still on the road.

If there were more wreckers available, they wouldn't have to be left there.

rimshot....................

Worst for me ranks as #1 and #1A. #1 was a 1988 Chevy 1/2 ton. The only reason I kept it as long as I did was because I couldn't get enough stuff fixed at any one point to sell it. Transmission failure (auto) Fuel injection base gasket(s)(3 times) Radiator leaked, stereo quit, windshield broke while parked in the driveway. drivers side window leaked, and to top it all off, it burned gas like there was no tomorrow.

#1A was a 1992 Chevy that I bought figuring they wouldnt do it to me 2 times in a row.

GM will never get the opportunity to do it again.

Re: What has been the worst car you\'ve owned?

My definition of bad means a car that was not designed to be repaired easily, where bolts and parts are inaccessible. The winner in this category is the Hyundai Elantra that my wife owned when I first met her 5 years ago. The the heater blower motor was not working, and I had replaced them on several other cars, so I thought I would do it. I got ahold of the service manual for this car, and found that to remove the motor, you had to remove the dash, but to remove the dash, you had to remove the steering wheel, to remove the steering wheel you had to remove the air bag, etc, etc, etc, etc, you get the idea. It was insane. The estimated time to do this was something like 12 hours and that assumes you have all the special tools. I decided I didn't have the time or patience so we took it to the dealer. The charge to remove and replace all these pieces to get to the motor was approx $800. Ridiculous. Compare that to and old chevy where you could pop out the blower motor from under the hood in under 5 minutes. They could have made this dash come apart in smaller pieces, but they chose not to. God forbid that someone might have to look at a seam or a bolt.

Re: What has been the worst car you\'ve owned?

The worst vehicle that I have ever driven was a 1986 Ford Econoline. The van developed what was finally diagnosed as a faulty spool valve. When you were stopped and turned the steering wheel to the extreme left or right it would make a loud pop and then it was like the steering wheel wasn't connected. It would spin free until you spun the wheel and found just the right spot. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It was at the point where the Ford service techs almost gave up on it as they were trying to rebuild the steering box time and time again. One of them finally got smart and went to a recycle parts store (boneyard) and installed a used steering box to eliminate the problem.

Re: What has been the worst car you\'ve owned?

I like Fords, have usually had good luck with them, and own two now, but the hands down worst (and only lemon) car I ever owned was a brand new 1966 Ford Fairlane 500. It spent so much time at the dealership being "repaired" (mostly unsuccessfully) that the owner of the dealership used to loan me his personal car while mine was in the shop. It was so bad that I didn't buy another Ford for 25 years. Of course I know it was just an anomaly, but we didn't have any "lemon law" like exists today. I always figured that car went down the assembly line at 60 mph late on a Friday evening. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
