Re: "What have I hit while bush hogging?"

While it's not bush-hogging, a mate of mine had to club his favourite fearless cat to death with an adjustable wrench after it appeared from nowhere and pounced on some movement under the grass.

Sicklebar mowers are not good for cat's legs, and apparently cats with no front legs make a noise that'll haunt you for years. :(

Keep your pets indoors when using sicklebar mowers!

Mice, lots of mice. I dont know if I have hit them, but I often see them running from one row to the other when I go by with the tractor cutting hay or mowing down the field.

Re: "What have I hit while bush hogging?"

A large nest of yellow jackets while slow mowing in a heavy growth. My first indication was sharp pains on my back. They got me over thirty times before I could get the tractor stopped.

I had a dog once that would roam the field while it was being mowed and stop and bark at the nests before you got to them. That dog saved us from multiple stings i'm sure.

Re: "What have I hit while bush hogging?"

I hit an opossum last year. It walked off into the woods but it appeared that I had lightly scalped him. I believe the shock of it all was his worst injury, one can imagine the environment underneath a brush hog while it's running. He stopped on a hill and looked at me, then walked off.

Barbed wire is my usual enemy. I have been taking it down little by little, but every now and then a strand that was buried gets caught in the blades. Rocks are always an eye-opener...they sound like bombs going off under the deck. Just enough to scare the crap out of you for a second.

Ouch...poor kitty.

When I ran over that baby deer...I had to go back and finish killing it because it was just lying there still breathing. I felt bad for it, but I thought it was better to go ahead and kill it immediately than let it suffer. It was basically smashed by the wheel of a large John Deere 4120 and also possibly hit with the mower. I wish it would have been killed instantly. Better yet, I wish I had seen it. The next year I saw a white baby deer lying in the tall grass while trimming around some trees with a gas powered string trimmer. I saw him in time and left it alone.

I ran over a large snapping turtle. Made lots of racket.

Had a fawn go through the disc mower conditioner last year, not a good feeling.

Re: "What have I hit while bush hogging?"

30 years ago my brother and I build a motocross track on our parents property. Convinced the local tire guy to release several pick up loads of used tires to mark some areas of the track. My dad had a 9N with an IMCO 5' mower that we used to clean up the perimeter of the track on occasion and it wasn't unusual for me to hit one of the tires. Stand on the clutch and wait for things to stop, disengage the the pto and drive away from the tire. Did it dozens of times. Once while backing off the "tire" there were huge chunks of snake meat laying about. I cringe when I think about the size that the blue racer was prior to meeting the blades.
I inherited that tractor and mower 15 years later. Sold the tractor, kept the mower and used it with a Massey 65. Nothing that I hit would stall that thing out; it doubled as a rototiller. Then sold the Massey and bought the 790. Painted the IMCO mower green and I still use it. New blades, modified the 3 point to use the I-match. Pretty solid mower for being 35 years old and with all the stuff it's hit. BTW haven't seen any big snakes since I moved back onto the property....thank you Jesus!

Re: "What have I hit while bush hogging?"

At the time, my neighbor's boys were both around ten years old, digging forts and such in their back pasture. He had an old MF but no rotary mower and asked me if I would mow (basic weed knock down) his three acres that his horses would not eat. Finished my place and went next door to his and within five minutes of mowing the front area, ran over and whirrled around a very new (no rust) full sized crow bar. The Bush Hog came out of it fairly unscathed, I got off the tractor and picked it up and threw it up on their back lawn in full view of him and the two urchins, raised her up and left. About a month later he had a rotary mower of his own and I for several years after have been an annual recipient of some very fine venison breakfast sausage!:licking:
