ordered a cheap 80$ starter today. have been dealing with starter drag for a bit. before anyone yells about cabling I needed a good battery for my portable generator so I grabbed the 2013 battery from the gc2400. put new napa agm in gc2400 and fixed all cables then in 2024.
portable gen now (keep in mind those use a computer battery) starts fine but the tractor still drags below 50f.
so...at 25f I deal with more drag then I should. yeah I could run block heater (its Maine, I have block heater) but...that does not negate fact I have starter drag,
the starter for this unit (part 3608543M91) is 900$ and aftermarket run 80-100$.
put crappy aftermarket in and keep working oem as spare is my plan.
plus my working worn 16yr old starter fits a bunch of units I work on locally.
so when aftermarket item arrives I'll let you all know how install went.
Try this one. I believe it only has about 100 hours on it and you should be able to get a 20% discount (I've bought from him before): Massey Ferguson GC1720 Iseki Diesel Starter Motor 3608543M91 | eBay

330$ used vs 80$ new (and cheap as hell really) I just spent...even if that 80$ one fails I am only out 80$ and have working original unit sitting in shed.

Is there someplace around you that would be able to rebuild the original starter?

Once rebuilt, set on shelf for a rainy/snowy day when the other one is sure to fail! 😂

I got home early this morning for my scheduled weekend off ... Little Baby Fergie helped out carrying a few things around ...

First was grab a few blocks in the barn and take them to the back deck ...

They were for my kitty door baffle I built here https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/threads/a-couple-of-disadvantages-of-a-kitty-door.618063/

I built the doorway big enough so in the future when I get a couple of dogs, they could also use it ... I wanted to block more of the wind ...

This inside looks like this ... They have sort of a maze to follow the purple arrow to get inside ...

Then we took the 2 bags of cat food I had in the metal barrel in the house, out to the barrel in the barn, as it was nearly empty, and I had 2 more bags getting delivered today ...

Once the FedEx guy came we went up and got a load of packages! 😁

Tomorrow the real work starts!

Been leveling out a part of my property that I’m trying to reclaim as lawn. Lots of low spots to fill in. I have two small piles of dirt that started growing grass. Knocked them down with the backhoe and pulled all the grass out and hauled that away. Dug two loader buckets of ash from my burn pit and relocated it into the woods.

Creeping up on 300 hours, so I’ll be servicing it before winter, it looks like. Last trans service was at 50 hours in 2011!

that is something I plan on looking into. but yeah working but worn is better to have on shelf vs none LOL

Swapped out the forks and ballast box for bucket and brush hog, put rocks in the bucket for front ballast (brush hog is HEAVY!) and put my chains on, then went out back to trim up the creek banks ...

I'm standing at my South property line, got 600' of creek, up to where my neighbors road goes across at the purple line ...

This is something a regular rear flail mower wouldn't be good at ... And I don't have enough weight, or want to spend the money on one on a hydraulic arm for my Kubota ... Another advantage of the low rear three point hitch arms!

My "Seat-O-Pants Meter" always makes it feels steeper than it looks ...

IMG_20251115_105108963~2.jpg

Got the East side done, time for a lunch break ... While it's slower than just walking the creek with my trimmer and a brush blade on it ... This is less wear and tear on me!

Got the other side done, as far as what I can do with the tractor and brush hog, tomorrow I hope to get the last little bit with the trimmer ...

IMG_20251115_142315819.jpg

Then I swapped out the bucket and brush hog for the forks and ballast box ... So I could get the rototiller down that's on a pallet sitting on my trailer ... As I had just got done sweeping up a bunch of leaves and dumped them in my garden area ...

IMG_20251115_155952392.jpg

Spread out the piles with the bucket the best I could ...

IMG_20251115_160636900.jpg

Then mixed them in!

IMG_20251115_161133276.jpg

Sure is a handy Little Swiss Army Knife Tractor!

IMG_20251115_161327342~2.jpg

Then put the rototiller away ...

No pictures today, cleaned up an hauled away 2 buckets of debris from trimming and cleaning up the bushes in the yard ...

Then worked on "disturbing" a pile of sided loam I occasionally work on, it had grown a full head of grass & weeds over the summer, I cut them down when I was out this no with the trimmer, then I scooped off the top few inches and dump that into a pile to mulch down ...

732.? Hours ...

Even though I dropped off my semi-truck at the terminal early Friday morning, they waited until this morning to bring it it for a service and a couple of tires! SO, I got the morning off ...

I never really liked the gap in my rear chains where the two ends "met" ... They are an old hodge podge of bits of broken chains I had kicking around ...

IMG_20251117_101413669.jpg

That's a pretty big gap with no chain!

So I came up with an idea to use a carabineer to hook one end, so I can take them on/off, and run it across at a diagonal ... I had bought the heavier truck twist chain, but the carabineer was too little to go over it ... So I found a couple of old bar cross links, and "hooked them together! 😁 Not quite a "professional" job, but it should work 😔

IMG_20251117_104854816.jpg

While the little chain slips down between the lugs, it's still sticks up some over most of the width.

IMG_20251117_104927339.jpg

I like how the other side came out better, as far as placement on the lugs ... When I take them off, I will probably switch them to be the same.

IMG_20251117_110601696.jpg

So, Little Baby Fergie is ready for snow! ❄️

If I should come home and need to clear the driveway, I just need to walk down to the barn and put the rear blade on ... If it's less than a foot and I come home with my pickup truck, I'll just drive in like the neighbors do!
