With all this rambling that I keep seeing about the CFO this and the CFO that, come clean and tell up really, how much influence does the wife really have in what tractor you purchase, how much you spend, where you buy, or how often you trade. Come clean and give us the honest scoop... do you really confer and defer to her wishes or are you just making all this up. Does she get a vote, a say, a objection, or even a chance to influence the purchase? Who holds the purse strings?

OK -- I'll bite. She holds one of the purse strings and I hold the other. Since she works, and makes almost as much as I do, she definitely has a voice in major purchases.

We have reached an income level where we don't necessarily confer in advance on small purchases, up to a couple hundred bucks or so. She doesn't complain about what I spend on fishing or guns/reloading, and I don't complain about what she spends on horses.

On something as large as a tractor purchase, she would be consulted, but her expected answer would be: "If you think we can afford it, then get what you really want, not something less and then complain about 'I should have got another color.'" With an attitude like that, I really think about it before I leap. She agrees that the tractor has been an excellent value for both of us - she gets more work done for the horses, pasture, barn, etc., and I don't complain about helping her with the work, because the tractor makes it almost fun /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

It will be 40 years this June, and I don't think I will trade her in on a newer model. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Junkman,

Well, I could be wrong...but my guess is that in the normal family...those of us who have had to work for a living and have not had cash to burn over the years...that if we are still together after 30+ years, well...it probably has been a 50/50 proposition, more or less... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In our house, there are two CFOs, each with an equal vote...and this works surprisingly well.

I wish I did not have to keep doing everything she tells me though... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Junkman,

This could be an interesting subject to get into /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

To come clean, I new what tractor I was getting, just a matter of when! But the wife was due for a new car and we started shopping for one.

One day she comes home from work and tells me to get the tractor because she didn't want a new car yet, after picking myself up off the floor and pinching myself to see if it was a dream I started shopping! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

And then waited for the delivery truck to arive /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Junkman, with the exception of buying the Cub Cadet 10 years ago, she has had absolutely no comment or say so on any tractor purchase since then. She has made a comment or two about how crowded the garage is getting and doesn't want a barn built just for my tractors. She felt bad when I sold the first Oliver that I restored. On the last tractor I bought she didn't even ask the price, and now that I am looking on replacing HER Cub Cadet she has not brought up the cost, but she did ask me to make sure that whatever I bought would be SIMPLE for her to use. TRANSLATION, it must have an HST and 1 gear range.

I feel I have a better grasp on the financial aspects of our marriage, so when I was delaying buying a tractor till she started working again I felt good about it. But she totally threw me off when she said that by not buying the tractor I was putting too much pressure on her. Against my better judgment I bought the tractor. She is now employed and we are living happily ever after, the end. Funny how things work out sometimes. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Well, I normally tell the wife about a purchase after I made the deal.
She still doesn't know about the Glock 19 I bought 3 or 4 years ago (she thinks I had it all along).

Of course, I couldn't hide the 670..and her first words when it was delivered were "Oh boy...it has a bucket...easier to bury you with..." And that, folks, is an exact quote.

However, the blizzard a year ago (36" or so here in southern PA) made a believer of her so things are cool now.

When I bought the cutter...not too much grief.

So, this year I'll look for a chipper...probably a Bear Cat.

All in all, I make most of the decisions about equipment like this...then suffer the consequences for a few weeks.

VERY INTERESTING POST! not sure it can be answered, with one simple ans., i guess we kinda talk over the majior pruchases, but as to make model, and such be it a car or tractor, i more or less make the final decesion. but always in the back of my mind are the things i know she likes, like her pereferce in cars are buick"s and she like browns or tans, but i never let that influence my decesion /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif just happened to work out that the current car she drives is a buick, and tan in color /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif good thing they don't make a brown tractor /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif i guess it just comes down to we are a team, have been for 40 years.

The wife and I both work in the same office and we are both equals in our business. We try to treat the marriage the same way only we both believe in the old adage: Lead, follow, or get the **** out of the way. Now I don't always lead but then again I don't always follow either. When she gets real mad I do however know when to get the **** out of the way. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Buying the new tractor, well that was the wifes idea not mine. I had a real hard time hiding the smile until she brought up the subject the second time around then I couldn't help myself. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No, I wouldn't trade her for a bass boat!
