What is a \"normal\" amount of FEL leak down?

I've owned about a dozen tractors over the years and no two were the same. On all but the first two, I always had a FEL. I'm well aware that it is a "must" to always lower any implement and the FEL when leaving the tractor for safety reasons. However, when I have left the FEL up overnight on my tractors, there has been a large difference in what they do. Some appeared to not have dropped any, and some have gone to the ground. I've asked dealers what is considered "normal", and they almost always say anything (any amount of leak down) is normal.

I recently had a flat on my 18' utility trailer I use to haul my tractor. I had a spare, but not a jack. No problem I thought; I'd just use my FEL to pick up the trailer and change the tire. No deal. By the time I could get out of the cab and get the lug wrench on the tire, it would be on the ground. I called my dealer about this and was told to not use my tractor FEL as a jack, and that leak down was normal. I just can't see it being normal for a FEL to not be able to hold 500 to 600 pounds up for more than a couple of minutes.

Now, after about 40 hours of moving snow, the FEL got to where it would go from 4' in the air to the ground in about 15 seconds if I have a load of snow in the bucket. It has obviously gotten worse, so I'm sure something has gone wrong with it. I just can't imagine that such a large amount of leak down is normal.

I've noticed the same thing with 3 pt. implements. Some tractors seem to not leak down any, and others leak down rather quickly. Anybody know what is really considered "normal"? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Obviously I would like a tractor that doesn't leak down much at all, but am I being unreasonable? Did I make a mistake by selling past tractors I've had that didn't leak down? In my mind, I'm thinking that an empty bucket on a FEL would be okay if it only leaked down 3 or 4 inches overnight. The same with the 3 pt. hitch. I'm wanting to know what I should reasonably expect when I get my tractor back from being repaired under warranty. What would you expect as a normal amount of leak down on a FEL? Thanks.

You sure do have a problem. The dealer needs to get it and look it over to find out what is wrong. It could be packing blowed out in a cylinder or one or two other things.

My little Koyker 160 on my Yanmar will stay put where you leave it for a month or more. Sounds like you have some sort of a leak.

Many manufacturers have established a tolerance for leakdown of loaders, etc. Your description would far exceed any I know of.

Re: What is a \"normal\" amount of FEL leak down?

Thanks for the replies. I hate to sound like I'm fishing for an answer I want to hear, but I am really glad to hear that you guys don't think it is normal for that much leak down.

RickB, your response is exactly what I'm wanting to find; some sort of tolerance guideline, or even a reference amount. It just so happens that the last tractor I had didn't seem to leak down hardly any, and my new tractor seems to have excessive leak down. Hopefully it will be obvious enough for them to fix it. Thanks again for the replies!

Re: What is a \"normal\" amount of FEL leak down?

Ideally, the 3pt should hold a load for several hours, or at least several minutes. Same should be try of the FEL. So far the FEL on my 1955 ford will hold a load for hours, while their 3pts will hold a load for days. My ex NH 1920 also held a load on the 3pt for days.. or even weeks. The 3pt on my 7610s will hold a load for minutes at least. And will drop a 2500# load about 8" in 10 minutes or so. Not ideal for me.. but the dealer says that is 'normal'. I think your situation is not normal. You either have a leaky cyl packing ( would be obvious ) or a bad spool.. or a faulty check / relief valve...

Re: What is a \"normal\" amount of FEL leak down?

Im with the others some leak down is pretty much normal, NEW should not leak much and wear makes em leak more. the FEL normal with weight should leak no more than an inch or two a min. the 3pt should not leak more than an inch or two a day... my FEl leaks down FAST when it is warm (fluid bypassing cyl or valve) but when cold it is rock hard. the 4pt is rock hard all the time /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I always try & lower it but once left it with box blade on for a week or more and it was still up about 2" (where it was at when I left off it.) anyhow mine is a leaky valve (I THINK) as I removed the suction side of the line when it was UP and the FEL still sank with no fluid comming out of the suction line side, (to me that means that the fluid was not going past the seals but past the pressure side ofd the valve spool. (no load checks in most of the tractor type open center spool valves I've seen.) this also is more consistant with the cold vs hot temp droop factor. valve warms up and tolerances get bigger letting more fluid past the seals. also mine has lighter actual hyd fluid in it where as manual spec 30 weight motor oil (china tractor)

anyhow I didn't have a leak down problem untill I smashed into a concrete piller with the FEL removing the piller a bit too hard. but I also dissassembled the valve and the tolerances seem high and there are no SEALS in there only metal close tolerance seal... I did not pull the spools to see if there were any scratces but there is also some rust on them from leaving it parked outside and I belive that may have scored the spools a bit letting the leak down get worse... "I should have coated valve spools with grease all around..."

anyhow hope that helps.

Re: What is a \"normal\" amount of FEL leak down?

on my tractor the 3 Pt. will hold my rear blade up for days with no leakdown my fel on the other hand will leakdown about a foot in 20 or 30 min. my friends old b8200 will hold the fel up for ever.

Re: What is a \"normal\" amount of FEL leak down?

This is excessive leak down. Either a bad cylinder seal or faulty control valve. These aren't tractor problems unless the loader uses a tractor control valve.

The only chart on-line that I know about for this type of hydraulic leak down is from John Deere. John Deere leak down
