That's why JH and I think you need a new one on hand so you can look at it and see if there is a ridge inside... or open end... or something you can grab.

Or conversely, have you got a pair of long nosed pliers that open up instead of closing down? Sure worth a try.

Squashing that strainer has been a problem long enough that JD might have designed them with something just inside the near end to help grab on to either by grabbing it or by opening the pliers up.

That type tubular strainer doesn't have much strength, I agree with JH that the damage is probably at the near end and that you are better pulling from as close as you can get to the near end rather than trying to get the end of a rod down to the far end. If you do get to the far end and it's open, don't put much of a pull on it or the whole strainer may buckle.

Uh....it occurs to me that first you should check the other side of the transmission housing to see if there is a removable plate for the far end of the strainer. Wouldn't that be nice !

I guess your ultimate fall back position is to rip the screen and put on an inline exterior crud filter. A hassle, but no reason it wouldn't work.

I just hope this is the steering problem...

I agree, I’d have a new one and just destroy the old one to get it out.
