A "rim" is the part of the "wheel" that holds the bead of the tire.
In 30+ years in automotive repair, and I have never seen an OEM parts manual, or computer estimating program, listing a part called a "rim", for any automobile, or truck.
There are parts called "wheels" for cars, which you mount your tires on.
Now, the boys in the hood like to call them "rims". And, the kids all seem to want to be from the hood today, so the incorrect term, "rim" has gained popularity.
If you make fancy, over priced, shinny wheels, for the ignorant, and you don't want to confuse them, you may want to call them "rims".
But, calling an automotive wheel a "rim", is technically incorrect.
