What is considered "normal" oil consumption for a CUT diesel?

Really, almost every post relating to trucks contains an anti-GM screed whether obvious or subtle...I'm just stating the obvious.

I am now as about anti GM as it gets but I will give a honest opinion on my last 5 new GM trucks if asked. I do agree with you that most cannot do that. CJ

I had a 93 Silverado - 145,000 miles- all me- didn't burn oil. I have a 2003 Silverado 2500HD- 103,000 miles all me- does not burn oil. Great trucks - no regrets.

What engine on the 2003? I have the same truck with a 8.1L gas engine and I get a low oil light about halfway through the oil change schedule. Doesn't leak, so it must be burning. That's a quart every 2k miles.

My 99 Blazer with the 4.3L doesn't seem to burn any, maybe 1/2 a quart in 7500 miles.

From what I understand the 8.1 did eat oil...A design flaw to be sure and all manufacturers have them from time to time..I have a Ford E-450 with the typical rotted exhaust manifold bolts that I can't find anyone who is willing to fix at any price..Personally, I'd rather have to add a quart of oil every so often than deal with this...

I have read in the past that some of the GM 6.0 V8's have oil consumption issues, and it may be that I drive so little (less than 40,000 miles on the Y2K engine) that I really don't see any consumption issues. To be honest, I really don't think Chris has been THAT critical of GM products on this thread, or in general elsewhere. Opinionated, perhaps, but not critical. I often wonder just how much oil consumption issues have to do with the engines in general, or poor maintenance. My third new vehicle, a '79 F150 with a 302 V8, was always babied by me and got regular oil changes with quality oil and filters by myself, and then at 55,000 miles it was midwinter so I took it to a quick lube shop. I don't know what they did, but afterwards it lost about 20psi of oil pressure and began burning oil. Needless to say they disclaimed responsibility.

6 liter Vortec in my silverado- 8cyl. Automatic.snowplow, towing package, oil cooler

Mine has a light that comes on and tells me to change the oil (about every 6,000 mi.) I try to change it at 3,000.

Never heard of that on the 6.0..Just the 8.1's...

Read some more of his truck threads...At least 60% have a GM hit job...I don't really care, just stating the obvious...I dislike Ford for a variety of reasons but I don't remind everyone of it every chance I get.

I have never seen a issue with the 6.0L motors. I have owned a few 8.1L motors in boats and they all used oil. Many of my clients, maybe 1/3 with 5.3L trucks say they use oil while 2/3 of them see no oil consumption.

If you look on the net the 5.3L and 8.1L oil issues are well documented.

I think you finding someone to fix your Ford is a local issue. Around here Ford and Toyota rule the roost and I could get your truck fixed at 10 different places in 10 miles. Local has a lot to do with it. Just look at local resale prices on brand A versus brand B.

wont find a local shop that will change 5.4L spark plugs, they all point to the dealer.

My 5.3 uses maybe 1/2 litre between changes.158,000 miles.

It's not fixing Fords...It's the Ford issues that no one heere want's to touch..Can't get to any of the manifold bolts without being Gumby and the plugs, forget it...Anything else is no problem. Guy up the road is fixing the rear calipers and replacing rear main brake line...Gonna need ball joints in a year or so too...50K on it and they are wearing out already...
