What is going to be the next "Big Thing"

I am thinking of a universal motor-generator power unit that can power a car, tractor, house, combine, whatever. A similar battery storage unit can be swapped out for the motor-generator for short-haul duties.

Modular automated algae growers that produce fuel and soylent green. :)

Hydraulic PTO power. No shaft, no coupling. Just hoses. It's been tried in various forms on 4 wheeled vehicles and motorcycles, but never quite made the breakthrough. It would sure be nice to simply pop two fitting into the hydraulic couplers when changing powered implements, rather than go 3 rounds with the PTO driveline.

Big Al

Probably be a lot safer too and this may be a strong point for manufacturers. Think about it there are only three ways to get power to a device. Hydraulically , electrically and mechanically. There is a new design for large windmills now where they turn a hydraulic pump with lines running down the tower. Saves a lot of gears and weight at the top of the tower also and you can push a lot of power through a line.

Might be able to make it a retrofit for older tractors, run the pump off the PTO.

Some company makes a large (by TBN standards) tractor that doesn't have a specific front or rear. You put an implement on each end and swivel the seat to face the more convenient direction for the implement you're using. I think it was articulated for maneuverablity and it must have two sets of controls or controls off to the side. And maybe two PTOs. That would be a great concept for compact tractors if it didn't cost $50k. I'm not saying its the next big thing because of the price.

Versatile made (what is claimed to be) the world's first bi-directional tractor. Maybe...maybe not...This unit came out in 1977. New Page 1

and this unit came out in 1998.

Yes! A 20" PTO tiller! The narrowest one I can find is the Agric 30" and its overall width is 36. Too wide for what I want. I want a tiller that fits on a CUT that I can till down rows of veggies and corn by straddleing TWO rows of plants with my tires yet still till/culitvate down the middle of the tractor. It could be built very light and instead of skids it would need to have two wheels that would adjust for depth of the tilling action. This is because skids damage the young plant roots and you can't till as close to the row. It would even be nice to have the tine layout like a troy built pony so that you could till right next to the row of plants without damaging the roots of the plants. Since it would be mostly a culitvater/weeder it wouldn't need to be built heavy and wheels should support the weight fine. I could then space my garden rows at 26 inches, straddle two rows and till down within 3 inches of my corn rows. No need to till corn once it gets over a foot or so. Seems like everyone I know has knee/ankle issues and walking a tiller down long rows in soft soil seems to aggrivate the joints like nothing else. It would look like this:

tractor tire:>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
veggie row:-------------------------------------------------------
Tiller width:()()()()()()()()()()())()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()())(()(
()()()()()()(()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()())(
veggie row:-------------------------------------------------------
tractor tire:>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh and I heard on the radio that next big thing was a "electrical banana".

That's what most people use a cultivator with sweeps for, weeding between the rows. You have to do it weekly though before the weeds get established.

I think we all got carried away and didn't really respond to your original post. Partly because that is a lot tougher question to answer. There are a lot of ideas in the build it yourself forum and I think it will be one of those folks who will have the answer.
