I and my wife drive nothing but stick shift vehicles. All the tractors I'd driven before were all gear, including most recently my neighbor's old (1970ish) JD 820. When it came to buying my own tractor, there was NO QUESTION that I wanted an HST one. Compared to cars and pickups, geared tractors are very clunky things and not something I wanted to fool with on the hills around here.

I tried the B7510 but didn't care for having the clutch (and therefore the brakes having to be on the right). Went with a JD 4010, which was almost identical price to the B7510. A JD 4110 of the same 20 hp was $2,000 more.

One thing that I like about the HST that I'd NEVER do with a geared tractor is move it while standing next to it. Have done this to fine tune where the draft arms were in relation to the implement quite a few times. You have to use an arm or hand to push lightly on the seat while reaching over to put the range selector in "L". Then just ease one of the HST pedals a bit. Could NEVER do this in a geared tractor. Wouldn't be either possible nor safe.

Good point and well made. I love 5 speeds but I never noticed a problem with my Mom's '67 Firebird automatic, (when it was new), I just pushed down harder. See also #578034 (Bob Skurka) reply.

That helps a lot, my 15 acres is a mix of flat and hills that rise/fall off 3 ways,(knolls and bowls), and woods and marshy areas by the spring and lotsa ROCKS. The nickname of the property is Turable Rocky as the old farmer neighbor lady called it when I met her,( Oh, it's TURABLE Rocky up there, TURABLE). We also are avid garderners, need to mow, and my hobby is rebuilding the stone fences. Lots of heavy loader work there. I got stuck in the spring pond area with a skid loader and left a lotta ruts getting out, (not to mention the ramps I've built). When my friend the local farmer, bales for me, he leaves me lots of round bales. We get about 70 bales or so off the 12 acres of orchard grass. I plan to dig out the spring and the also the foundation/footings, for my tractor house,(garage),That kinda describes my needs, TLB.

Oh, yeah, I forgot, my 11 yo daughter rides and wants her own horse, ( I want a goat). She get's one if she gets straight As 2 semesters running.

You are in serious trouble now Bill. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif A tractor is incredibly cheap compared to horses.. heheeh You of course, can't just get one, they are herd animals after all.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I guess I am fortunate that she doesn't get Math, 4 As and a B so no horse yet. My wife rides so she brings some reality to the discussion. But I guess if she ge's the horse a Hydrostatic will be easier for her to drive and take care it, what with hay and manure and ......who am I kidding?She won't even make her bed.
