What is in and where is a good overall chain?

If the OP is as dyslexic as I am on occasion, I suspect he mixed up his numbers a little. Could it be that his 2015R FILB is actually a 1025R FILB or a 2025R FILB?

If so, then I think 1/4" 70 grade would be plenty strong enough. That is what I use with my jd 2720.

The OP's avatar says 1025R. Either the OP changed his tractor in the avatar or Jeff misread the model number. I agree that 1/4" chain is adequate. What's a FILB?

The FILB acronym is John Deere's idea to tell us Factory Installed Loader & Backhoe.

We have several of the HF package chain deals all bought on sale (grade 70) and all have worked fine.

Use them to chain down the machine to haul as well as lift, pull, yank, drag anything we need to.

The 3/8 is a good move - not as heavy to carry around than 5/16 and will hold a but more than 1/4".

Since you have a front loader, we just use the length needed to connect and toss the rest in the bucket - that way 20' is a fits all chain.

I just use 1/4 grade 43 from Walmart to lift fence post

Wait, what? 3/8" is heavy chain... 5/16" is a bit lighter, and 1/4" lighter yet... ?? Did you mean the opposite of what you posted? 5/16" being a good compromise as not as heavy as 3/8" and stronger than 1/4"??

FWIW, Grade 43 "High Test" is pretty good chain for general use too, IMO. Gr 70 "Transport" is about 20% stronger than Gr 43.

For a SCUT there really isnt a need for more than 1/4" GR70 chain. But I'd probably opt for 5/16 GR70 just because is really isnt much heavier than a 1/4" or that much more $$.

I have chains of all sizes. Most of my short chains are either 1/4" or 5/16" used alot for lifting stuff with a FEL.

I dont think there is a FEL on a sub-100hp tractor that would break a 5/16 chain. But tractors can usually pull way more than they can lift. I have 3/8" gr 70 chain for tie downs as well as for skidding and pulling. I actually need to find some 1/2" chain. Been keeping an eye for some yardsale gems, and on c-list.....cause 1/2" is a big price jump over 3/8" new. But I am patient.

A general guide, hopefully you can read this when clicked on (subject to individual manufacturer recommendations & rating)

chain.jpg

Size of chain (1/4", 5/16" 3/8", 1/2") means nothing, unless you know the grade.
What I find difficult, if not impossible at a general hardware (or TSC), is to then buy a suitably rated hook or a "connecting link" to connect the hook to the chain.

....the next step is then figuring out what the rating is. "Working load" versus other rating, versus safety factor (1.5, 2.5, etc...)?.
