What is the Environmental Impact of Burning Wood?

We don't any restrictions where I live, except for burn bans when things get too dry. I don't need a permit for any burning, but in more populated areas, there are restrictions. I think burning leaves is a little goofy, I've always either composted or mulched them into the grass.

I just bought a EPA approved stove, and I get a tax credit for buying it!!

5 million+ acres of forest burn every year, and that's OK,but we just try to keep warm, and get attacked.

There you go, being sensible, Barry.:D They do prescribed burns in forests and one big volcano belches more ash and soot into the atmosphere than all the cars in N. America, but the little EPA lawyers get on their jet planes and gather to plan strategy to justify their next pay increase and how to create another bureaucracy to ensure long-term employment. I didn't just dream that up. I used to be very close to an HR person who worked for the EPA. She said most EPA lawyers spend most of their time trying to justify a higher salary or GS rating for their jobs. She spent most of her time rebutting their assertions.

I think we could toss a few lawyers in those volcanoes...sort of a "virgin sacrifice to appease the gods" type of thing.
Although I doubt most lawyers are virgin and any gods would probably spit them out...it would be nice to be rid of a few dozen (hundreds? thousands) of lawyers...being government lawyers is icing on the cake

There is more than a grain of truth in what you say; there are a lot of over-achiever lawyer types in the federal government. Having worked for the state for nearly 20 years, in the area of environmental enforcement, I can testify that there are a lot of lawyers in the states that go head-to-head with EPA lawyers to protect your rights.

Please don't confuse my disdain for EPA lawyers as being disdain for the environmental scientists who work hard to understand our world and come up with solutions for improving our air, water, and even food. An environmental scientist might tell you that you needed to lower the emissions from your fireplace and describe acceptable levels and how to achieve it. The EPA lawyer would say you need to have it done by tomorrow morning or pay a huge fine.:confused2:

I knew what you were referring to in that earlier post...
I'd like to see the number of lawyers in government reduced by 75%...frankly, the lawyers are the "non-essential" persons.
I'd like to see them replaced by engineers who can work to solve problems, rather then just issue regulations. A case in point...the EPA (via Obama's direction) shut down coal burning plants in West Virginia...now, that put a lot of people at risk of losing their jobs (coal miners are who I'm referring to). The EPA engineers could have come up with solutions...rather then more regulations.

I can guarantee that it doesn't always work that way Roy; the bureaucrats, Engineers and politicians are as much to be feared as the lawyers...in fact, the lawyers, if they are doing their job, will keep the bureaucrats on the straight and narrow. Bureaucrats, when they are without legal counsel or when they ignore the advice of the lawyers, are the problem.

I've seen variations on this where (actual temperatures may be different)
-50 New Englanders have one more barbecue before it gets cold
-80 H3ll freezes over, Red Sox win the world series

Of course, the Red Sox have won the world series more than once this century, so the last one doesn't apply anymore.

I'd also swap the positions of where American cars don't start & Japanese cars don't start.
