What Is This Bug?

Bird,

I found one of them too!!

I was on my littel tractor when it landed on my back. Steph freaked, which caused me to panic, because I thought it was a wasp!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

After doing the "DANCE," it fell off and I took this picture.

I was told you have to have cottonwood trees for them to be around, and I thought I did, but I was wrong. The birch trees here in Texas look like Cottonwoods I've seen in Wyoming. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

So now I don't know what it was doing here,
Eddie

Eddie, if you have no cottonwood trees in your area, that's a big surprise to me. I sure thought you'd have them. But I didn't think there were any birch in your area. To the best of my knowledge, the first time I ever saw a birch tree was on the way to Alaska in 1972; didn't know there were any in Texas. You know there are two kinds of cottonwood (male and female maybe?); one that produces cotton and one that doesn't. Unfortunately, the big one next door produces cotton. Several days, it's looked like it was snowing around here. RV parks usually hate that kind because it clogs up their air-conditioners. And of course, I have to keep a close eye on the outside unit here to make sure the condenser doesn't get clogged with it.

Eddie, I kinda agree with Bird... I don't know of birch trees in Texas. Here's a site that discusses the Bronze Birch and its range. There seem to be lots and lots of birches... maybe one lives in your area... or could it be a cottonwood in disguise? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Here is the info on the Eastern Cottonwood which does live in your area.

Bird, is this what retirement has reduced you to, taking pictures of bugs? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why don't you get yourself elected constable or something. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
