I don't know if I have cottonwoods or not. I've never identified one yet for sure. What I thought were cottonwoods are River Birch, and they are all over Texas. Here's a link that will show some of the types of birch trees we have. The peeling bark is very common on them, along with the multiple trunks.

Eddie, I've probably seen those birches and just didn't know what they were. The pictures on that site don't look like any birch I've seen, but then their pictures of cottonwoods don't look like any I've seen either. Attached is a picture of the one next door that I'll estimate at 80' to 90' tall.

Bird, cottonwoods seem to grow anywhere there is water. I like the sound the leaves make when the wind blows through them, but I would never plant a cottonwood willingly. Weak wood, prone to problems like rot, roots that take much of the surface water and at times, drop a fine sap. The female obviously is a pain as the cotton is a nuisance and gets everywhere. This year has been particularly buggy here becasue of all the rain we had this winter. Bug wise, I feel like I'm in Texas where I understand from from some Houston transplants here that the bugs are big and prolific /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That tree next door spreads the cotton everywhere, I've even had it blow into my coffee while I was sitting on the patio behind my house. Then in the Fall when the breezes come out of the north, those big leaves fill up my rain gutters. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif And if it gets weakened and the wind blows it down, well, it depends on which direction the wind is from, but it could very well fall onto our house or theirs.

Eddie, I been educated! Thanks for the site... didn't know about it... excellent info... I 've bookmarked it.

I discovered that the black/red/river/water birch is found in Texas..yep, in the "wetlands of the Pineywoods and the Post Oak Savannah and is best adapted to moist soils"....
