Does anybody have any idea what this implement is? I inherited it from my grandfather who passed away 10 years ago. I vaguely remember him saying he used it to run over fields when he overseeded them but I could be wrong on that. I never actually saw him use it. Any idea on who made it and roughly what era it came from? I don't think I've seen something like it before.

I have one identical to that. I use it to arerate my yard. Had no idea what it really was. Got it off my father inlaw. He didn't know either. Only difference being is mine is a pull type.

That's pretty neat! Just in looks alone. And its from your grandfather, so you have a connection to it. I'd pull it out of there, get it up on blocks out of the dirt, spray it off and set it in a flower bed if you have no use for it.

Also used on soybean fields when soil is worked fine and the crust of the soil gets rock hard after a hard rain then sunny days at the same time that the seeds are germinating and seedlings are trying to push up through the soil. The seedlings can literally get trapped beneath the hard crust. A quick/shallow pass with the rotary hoe breaks up the crust and allows them to emerge. A few seedlings are killed by the hoeing but the reduced population can mostly compensate by making additional branches and yield reduction is only slight.

Organic truck farmers sometimes use these for weed control instead of herbicides. No idea what the worth in dollars would be but it being in your family is worth a lot. If you'd rather see it being used check with a organic grower in your area if there are one and they'll know several more that might could use it.

Good looking old piece of equipment so get it up on blocks or some kinda stands. A cheap paintbrush and a bucket of used oil would help it.

John Deere 6 ft Rotary Hoe used to break the hard crust after a packing rain on the corn fields. Commonly used nowadays to aerate yards and fields. Can also be used to incorperate seed. Ken Sweet

Hmmm...I have a pasture I'm going to overseed so I might see myself using this in the future. I Google'd John Deere Rotary Hoe and sure enough it looks just like it!

I have sold several of them over the years with good customer feedback. I have personally, put seed in the ground on our farming operation. I get best results by letting the cattle graze the existing grass real low before I seed. Ken Sweet
