What is your favorite breed of dog and why ???

I like all dogs but prefer dogs that are over 30 pounds. Anything smaller than that is just not big enough. I like hound dogs that are pointer/retrievers. I like the long droopy ears.

I look for interesting crosses. I have a Lab/Weimaraner and Springer/Fox Hound and they are both great dogs.

Got them both at the pound. I looked at a few pure breds at the time but the breeders were just kind of weird and I don't know enough about the paperwork to make sure that the dogs aren't inbred. I've had my dogs for 8 years now and they are great.

If I had to pick a breed that I would recommend to anyone it would be Labrador Retriever - by far the best all purpose dog on the market.

If I had to pick a breed for myself - currently I'm partial to Rhodesian Ridgeback's, English Pointers, Weimaraners.

I grew up with a Beagle and a Cocker Spaniel so they always have a special place with me but they are a little too small for my liking.

I need a dog that can hike in the woods for hours without getting tired, can retrieve a ball, and loves to swim. Short hair is nice too - it dries faster.

( Just curious as to what is your favorite breed and why it is your favorite breed of dog. )

And yours..... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't have a favorite breed. I have three different purebreds myself, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, a Presa Canario and a German Shepherd (German) and they all have their own personalities, which I like. I love all dogs, but I guess I prefer larger breeds. Some of those little guys have big personalities, though.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
If I was going to get another dog I honestly don't know what kind it would be.

Hey, look at my pic and make a good guess. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif My mom was from Austria and my dad from Hungry. I'll be cool about it and put up with the Border Collie that my owner makes me live with. Heck, she's even been fixed and is never in the mood anyway! But, we both mind our owner without hesitation; even if we get into a high speed pursuit of a deer. Man, how I hate that when he calls us off of the chase! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif But, if I'm really hungry (must be my Hungarian half), I'll just butt the Border Collie out of the way whether she likes it or not! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif And, yes, I'll play "fetch" and all of the other stupid games if my owner insists, but I'd really rather just chase bugs and take a dip in the lake every half hour or so all summer. Man, that's a blast!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Akita: because they are loyal, protective, loving: but for some of the same reasons i wouldn't have one, again. with 4 GRANDkids, i prefer not to take any chances with any dogs.
second choice is boxer: but the last one i had snapped at my GRANDson; big mistake. so now i just have donkeys. had a mini-jenny born June 2.

I like Border Collies,Dalmations (especially the deaf ones), and Golden Labs.
The Border Collies are great herders, very intelligent, and very loving.
The Dals are smart, loving, and a joy to watch their antics.
The Golden Labs, well, everybody knows why.
All three of these dogs are good with kids too. The Dals need special attention for there energy levels so if you cannot dedicate the time or have a lot of room for them to run around I would not recommend them.

The mutts can be great dogs and I like the Beagle too but they aren't exactly my favorites.

Give me a part Lab pound puppy and I think I would be happy. We've got 3 at present, lab/chow, lab/red healer, lab/something, all with completely different personalities and all a lot of fun.

I haven't been around pure breds since I was a kid and those were Labs, German Shepherds and Staffordshire terriers. As a kid, the terrier was a gem of a dog. We spent many, many happy hours just piddling around together although now I mostly prefer bigger dogs. I think I'll stick with Lab/mixes because I haven't met a bad one yet and besides, pound puppies need a home and loving too.

Boxers are our favorite. We have had them for more than 40 years. Bred and shown them for 30 years. Now just a house pet.

They are clean, little odor or shedding. Once they bond with a kid the kid can do almost anything. When our son was little I would have to lock his Boxer away to discipline him. Snapping at a kid particularly with a Boxer usually means that the kid was doing some thing it should not have been doing to a dog. The dog always takes the blame.

They are fantastic friends.

This past Monday, we had to have our 16-1/2 year old Toy Poodle put to sleep. That was one of the toughest things I've done in my life. She was so loyal to me and at my side continually if possible. I've had many different breeds of dogs but she was almost like a person, understood what you said to her. Not the same around here without her for sure. It made this old, fat, gray haired old man bawl like a baby-I'm not ashamed to say. She thought the tractor was hers, loved to ride with old Dad.

American Staffordshire Terrier!!

I have had several dogs but this one has stolen my heart. She almost never barks, looks intimidating, and loves people. She also has to be touching someone all the time. Most people mistake her for a pit bull which she is not. Got her for the wife and son for add protection if I'm away. I fell sorry for any intruder we have because there will be no warning.

Last week her looks came in handy. Had some folk stop by pushing there religion (I have no problem with religion, just don't need any help from soliciting). I opened the door holding the dog by the collar. She just wanted to go out the door and say hi. It's been a long time sense I have seen a persons eyes that big. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I informed them I was not interested they quickly turned and left. Fastest I had ever gotten rid of these folks without being rude and slamming the door.
