I've had Labs since I was a pup myself. One was special. "Honey" was her name. (Given by my mother, because of the dogs color.) She was an entertainer, that ol' dawg! (The Lab, not my mother) We bought a house with a pool shortly after my wife and I married. We had some floating lounge chairs. During the day while we were at work, Honey would jump in the pool, swim out to the lounge chairs, climb in, and go to sleep. She'd be laying there in the pool sunning when we got home. We had a 6' chain-link fence around the back yard. Honey would climb the fence, jump over, then bark to let you know she had managed to get out. I'd fuss at her, and she'd climb back in the yard.
But my FAVORITE is the dog we have now. She was a Humane Society "Rescue dog". She's a Papillon/Britteny Spanial mix. She ended up with more of the Papillon traits, but has the Britteny face. She LOVES kids, and my cousins 120 LB Boxer. This is without doubt, the smartest dog I've ever been around. She rides with me on the tractor when we're baling hay.
I also have a soft spot for Schnauzers. My dad had one when he was in his last years. That dog would follow him around like a shadow. Dad passed away (at age 86) 4 years ago. He had a massive heart attack, and fell down in the hallway leading from his bedroom. When I found him, Max was curled up next to him, nose to nose, almost begging dad to get up. Max died 5 days after dads funeral. (He was in apparent perfect health)
Dogs have a way of making ones troubles seem so small. They love us with no conditions.
I'm a big fan of author Roger Welsch. He has authored several books on tractor collecting and restoration. (Or at least he CLAIMS that's what they're about) He is one of the funniest people I've ever met. He released a book about a year ago, entitled My Life With Dogs. (I MIGHT be wrong about the title....but it's SOMETHING like that) I suggest to any dog lover that you get it and read it. All it does is REMIND us what we already know about dogs..... But it's darned funny, and very good reading.
