I still don't get that one! My mother said it all the time, probably got it from her mother.

Like somehow it would matter that you had skid marks, if you should end up in the ER :confused2:

I think it's the shame factor, which was more powerful back in the day. This is a good example of that fact.

I think it stems back in the day when underwear was not something that was changed every day. But then again was there an ER...back in the day?

"Be sure to clean behind your ears and put on clean underwear. You never know when you might be in an accident".

I think it stems back in the day when underwear was not something that was changed every day. But then again was there an ER...back in the day?

I think every mom in the 1950s used that cliche. Mine did...

As you know, little boys didn't always care for bathing...even though it was only twice a week (for my family). Also, play was normally an outdoor activity back then, hence, more opportunity to get dirty.
The expression was something my mother used to persuade us to try to be clean.

Now, if you're really in an accident...well, your skivies will be the least of your concerns!

In the 60's, Me, my brother and another neighborhood kid attempted to go the entire summer without bathing  We called ourselves Dirt, Grub and Grime  I think I was Grime, being the youngest and practically living outdoors.

Not sure how long we went before we were forcibly bathed
But after a period of time my mother wouldn't let us in the house, and fed us on the back porch with the cat!

I got a 13 year old now that smells like a mule half the time
