I still don't get that one! My mother said it all the time, probably got it from her mother.
Like somehow it would matter that you had skid marks, if you should end up in the ER :confused2:
I think it's the shame factor, which was more powerful back in the day. This is a good example of that fact.
One saying an old lady in the neighborhood would use on us teenagers, when we were just hanging around was..
"Idle hands are the Devil's workshop"
How true is that? I think these old sayings were an important part of human learning, even more so before formal education. Kind of like proverbs to live by.

"Excuses are like A*sholes, everybody got one"
A customer of mine used that one on me, when I was trying to explain to him why I didn't snow plow his business's parking lot before opening time
