My family does a little driving, and the way it's been explained to me is that Right and Left sound almost the same to a horse/Mule/Ox/Sled Dog. Gee and Haw are different enough that animals can make out the difference.
OK, I'll bite, but I just have a couple questions. How do they know? Did the horse tell them? Is "Mr. Ed" still alive? :D

Hmmmmmm...applies to my wife too, BTW.
Sorry Roy, I don't think there are any wife trainers here. ;)

Actually the horse sort of did tell them. The way to train a draft animal to respond to the commands is to hitch them with another animal that knows the commands. The older trained horse responds to the commands and the younger horse figures it out.

I don't know how they taught the first one.

Heres 2 of mine one is famous and the other one was coined by an old crusty Superintendent on a job.

I have learned, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.
Henry David Thoreau

The one old Fred coined was We had a younger worker on one of our crews that got into dope bad. He was a roided out body builder on the side. He had gotten into it with a 6 foot 5 inch tall hulk of a man named Big Jim. Jim was quiet but pretty firm. THe young man was about 25 and Jim had caught him stealing from the job.

The boy tried to jump him and had pulled knife. Jim Popped him in the head with a fst apparently and the boy had an unknown annuerism that burst in his brain and he died.
Monday morning the news broke out at the morning meeting while we were letting the machines warm up.
About that time the announcement was made one of the laborers that worked with the boy said well isnt anyone gonna say anything on behalf of the his coworker. The Super looked out over the crowd with hard hat in hand and head bowed and said.

Ashes to Ashes dust to dust If ole Jody hadnt messed with Big Jim his A55 would still be with us.

"if wishes were horses, beggars would ride"

You can tell an idiot (fool in some versions) but you can't tell them much.

Tomorrow tomorrow and tomorrow creep in this petty pace from day to day and all our yesterdays have lighted fools the way to dusty death. Out out brief candle, life is but a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and is heard no more, a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and furry, signifying nothing. I said this years ago.
