Credit for the inspiration goes to a submarine.

I always thought that went Fair to "Middlin" as in inbetween.
"Fair to Middling" was a grade of cotton. It's a "Southern Thang!" :D
Which reminds me of another two of my most favorite quotes:
"If you ain't from the South, you just don't understand."
"You ain't from here, are you?"

The commonly used cotton grades were something like: (as best I can recall. My grandpa was a cotton farmer, not me) ;)
Fine
Good
Fair
Middling
Ordinary
Poor

So "Fair to Middling" was about average.

"Middling" is still a term used to grade cotton. Look at the chart on the bottom of this page: The Classification of Cotton

Glad someone enjoyed that. A buddy of mine often tells me that I am a "plethora of useless knowledge."

I am also reminded of another old Southern farm saying:
"That won't Gee-Haw." (Gee and Haw were Right and Left commands for the plow animals)
So something that didn't Gee-Haw, wouldn't go right or left. (or just didn't make sense, wouldn't work, etc)
