My Mother used to stick her foot in it every so often, she had been in Australia only a couple of years and still used her typically English saying.
I was about 18 and with a group of friends, we had been messing around with an old car and were quite dirty especially our faces, she came out and said 'have you all been rooting' which was a common English expression, friends were taken aback and didn't know what to say as 'rooting' in Australia is slang for procreation.

That's funny. I've always wondered why all people spoke the way we do. Where did our expressions come from. Being from the deep south, many make comment (whether good or bad) about my southern drawl, of which I am very proud of. Funny you talk about rooting. Down here we've an old expression our moms would say when we came in from playing outside. It was "It looks like you've (Yawl have ) been rooting with the hogs". Saw a program on tv one-time that was about ther various dialects in the USA. Many sayings especially the deep south went back to Elizabethan English, Ireland, Wales and Scotland". Just read an article that the Applachia area just north of us in Geogia still have a lot of Elizabethan sayings. 99.9% i fully understand and identify with.

I'm trying to find it without luck. Might have been about a train. Probably one of those classic actors like they don't make anymore, Bronson, Marvin or Borgnyne (sp?). Just pretty boys like Tom Cruise, nowadays.

Anyway, it said something like, "Turn Her Over, Says Made in He**"
