Cash is universal gift certificates - accepted everywhere. (I have 3 kids).

Making change and doing basic math are lost skills. A donut shop opened recently. They have a dedicated register for cash sales plus a calculator to it for figuring out change. Today in Home Depot walked past a guy using voice assistant on phone to do math. Believe he was trying to do unit price comparisons.

A guy I use for small engine repair says Good Morning at any time of day. I figured he might have just regained consciousness after a hard drunk.

When you get your money back, ask if you can get one two bit piece, one 50 cent piece and one silver dollar. That will really get the young ones confused.

I still remember the "good ol' days" when I was a grocery checker. We had the old National mechanical Cash Registers. You punched the number keys, then punched the "meat" "produce" or "grocery" keys; hit the "enter" bar with the side of your hand. Push the "select" lever up to "subtotal", hit the "enter" bar, read the subtotal, and calculated the tax in your head. Punch in the amount, hit the "tax" key, push the "select" lever to "total" and hit the "enter" bar. You then made the change and counted it out to the customer.

The hardest part was memorizing all of the week end specials; also it took a while to toughen up your right hand so that it didn't get so sore from all the pounding on the "enter" bar.

I remember working in retail in the 60's before calculators and we had a little book of percentages so we could work out a quote on an item.
We started with a figure then added 57% profit then 27.5% sales tax, every amount had a page, just add a pen and paper to total, so say an item was $12..80, yo found the 57% page, went to the 12 then the 80, yotaled the two then started again on the 27.5% page.
Back then almost every item had a different tax figure unlike the 10% we have now.

My VoAg teacher used to say "Two heads are better than one, even if one is a gourd head"!
