I use to tell my kids when they were growing up to "be a leader not a follower" and it stuck because they use it on the grandchildren.

The guy that sells me hay says, "If I didn't grow it, and I didn't kill it, then I don't eat it."

This is more in relation to not wanting to consume growth hormones and whatever goes into store-bought chicken and stuff. I do know that he likes beer, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't grow it, so it sounds like a flexible rule.

I could interpret your dad's saying in a similar manner, but it sounds like he didn't.
I would guess that was the origin of the saying.

The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.

My Mom had a small wooden plaque with that on it in our kitchen all the time I was growing up. Wonder what happened to it. Probably got converted to what it came from.

Yeah, my Father spake it in German all the time. My sister transliterated it to "can you drink it with a stick?" and still does... :D
You can't beat that with a stick.

Two favorites from my Dad: (though neither is probably considered socially acceptable anymore)

Stupidity is punishable.

Not everyone deserves to eat steak.
