What kind of Rods to weld with a 110 welder

to get penetratin i was told to go slower and turn up the amps
i dont know what the conversion is nut i can weld most metal with 2.5 mm rods at 100 amps (think that about 1/10 of an inch??)

I think we are both asking for info from those who know. But I think 90 amps is way too much for a 1/16 rod. I may use 90 or less for 3/32 rods or even 1/8 rods if the metal is relatively thin. The chart I gave the link to showed a 1/16 rod good up to 40 amps.
Where is wroughtn harv when you need him?? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

in that case 90 amps is the correct for your 3/32 rods, but i cant see why you can run them higher (correct me otherwise)
1/16 rods souds sbsurdly small, i cant think of amny applications for them, and certainly i would go bigger for any applications like your hitch. i have used 1/8 (3.2mm) kinda sucessfully at 120 amps
im lead to believe and in my experience go real slow to heat her up and weld better
ok, ill shut up now and let the master welders chime in, Harv you there? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the reply. I will give some of what has been said here a try when I get home.

I love my job (work on computers) but man wouldn't I rather be home welding something right now

running 90 amps on a 1/16 rod should glow red and melt to nothing in no time..the more you do something the better you will become.. my first beads were actually gobs of molten steel..if you have any 7014 3/32 rods, they are nice to use as a final pass weld.. they have high iron content, and are a fast deposit rod..real easy to use..try to do all your welds(if possible) in the horizontal position... 6011 rods give great penetration, but are harder to use because you cant drag it,you must maintain a small gap under the rod or it will stick..keep at it though(practice) and before you know it, you will amaze yourself..

oh this is an elcheapo 110v/100 amp welder and I am runing it in my garage wich the wiring in the garage isn't that great so it probably isn't really getting 90 amps but that is what the welder is set at. I am thinking now that the rods I was using were 5/32 not 5/64th, which probably makes them a little large for that 110 welder. which is why I stopped and bought the 3/32 rods this morning. The 1/16 rods I bought at lowes mad a beautiful bead but man did the burn up fast and I got no penetrattion, I could weld the two peices togther, let them cool and break them back apart with my bare hands. with the bigger rods, If I got a weld going they would hold togther pretty good but looked like crap.

I might stop on my way hone and get one more small box of 6011 in 3/32 size that way I will have 6011, 6013, and the 7018 all in 3/32. plus I will have the 6011 in 1/16, 6013 in 5/32, and a few old 6011 in 5/32 or 1/8 (can't remember)

Might have to take the welder up on the porch and plug it into a better circuit and see if that helps. if it does maybe I will run a better service out to the garage and an additional 220 line, in the spring. right now the garage is on the sam ciruit with the lighting in my basemenet and the wiring that goes out there isn't the heaviest guage. I mean it is safe for 20/30 amp service but could stand to be ungraded. Been going to do it for a long time but with my back I just couldn't do the digging, now I have the tractor, I guess I have no excuse, except I hate going into the breaker box.

Well anyway guess I better get back to work for a little bit. Wish I could sneak out early and go home and weld something but you know how bosses are about getting work done /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

BTW can someone tell me what the difference is between the 7014 and a 7018 rod is, practically speaking. I know it is something to do with the coating on the rod but as far as, will I actually notice a difference when using one vs. the other?

Sheet metal on a 30a setting. Keeps ya from burning thru. I welded in a new bottom to the battery box on my allis g this weekend. That was the only rod/amp combo I could use to keep from burning thru.

I also like the 1/16 rods for bad conditions, with the amps turned up, and then make fill or finish passes with 5/64.

I occasionally pick up a pound of something called''?? surestrike.. or similar.. I swear you could strike an arc on a piece of wet cardboard with those rods.. almost impossible to stick as well.. I like the 1/16 rods in the 3/4 length ... good for sheet metal..
