What kind of shackles do folks use to hold rear tire chains on? I've tried regular "D" shackles, but the pins get all mushed if they're pointing out (the flat blade that you tighten the pin with), and I'm worried they'll cut into the tire if pointing in. The links are twisted, so I can't really get the shackles to lay flat on the tire. Also tried flush pin shackles that are tightened with a 3/16" allen wrench, but the pins work out and also get pretty mushed up. I've had to sawzall more than one off in the spring.

Any enlightenment from oldtimers who know is appreciated.

No help here but I have been using the D shackles for years and, other than a time that one unthreaded when I had not tightened it enough, never had a problem with them.
And I have used the tractor in any number of situations where the chains have been rubbing and bashing against rocks, sticks and what have you.
Maybe I just have been lucky.

I use the D ring shackles usually SS, threaded.

If you can enlarge the pictures the shackes show up good.
The first pic has 3 visible about 9 o'clock on the tire,
the second has 4 about center,
the last pic has one about 3 o'clock on the tire.

Don't have a photo handy; I'll take one in the am. The chain has two bands of chain that go around the tire forming a "ladder"; they're tied together every 8" or so across the center of the tire. These are the ones that are shackled together. Outside of those are the rings that go along the side wall of the tire.

A plug coupling. Hmm. Never used one. Are they easy enough to drive the pin out? They'd have to be removed once a year.

It's from those that make Trygg chains, I do believe those chains are sold in the US

Does anyone know if the pin in these can be easily hammered out with a punch, just as it went in?
