What Kind of Steel Pipe Do I Have?

Galvanized pipe fumes can make you sick. If you do breath them and feel sick, drink a glass of milk. Sounds funny but I was taught that in welding school and I have experienced it first hand.

I've heard this also, except is was buttermilk or whole milk, not skim.

Great job on the anvil, Hillbilly!

I think it's the calcium content. I think it acts as a chelating agent.

Fifty years ago when I was in college, I interned a summer jobs at the old Kaiser Steel plant in California. I was a metallurgy major and they offered summer jobs at union wages (but you didn't have to join the union).

One of the things I learned was that small diameter water pipe was made mostly from scrap including scarp trimming from the rolling mills and occasionally cast iron and other unknown materials.

Basically, it was junk.

Hey wait a minute, thats high quality Chinese steel now!

Not to pick a fight but Chinese quality is on the rapid rise. They are learning from us like a dry sponge likes water! One of the USA's iconic brands in BOEING will, in the not too distant future, be challenged by COMAC. People can laugh at Chinese quality but most of us accept the 'get what you pay for' proposition that Chinese offer. Looking back a bit we also laughed about Japanese quality (now US firms study theirs) and Korean quality. I think many here would be surprised if they really knew the amount of 'quality' stuff coming from Asia. Sorry to rant a bit but getting tired of the ignorance and arrogance of many Americans and orezok, please, please in no way am I targeting you here. You just tee'd me up to voice my thoughts. Man, I need a vacation!

No problem. I fully agree. I just used the Chinese as the coloquial. The Chinese have launched men into space, have the largest hydro electric dam in the world, have nuclear weapons etc. etc. etc. It's the American Corporations that are really responsible for cheap Chinese goods in this country. Greed before quality!

Roger... Greed I suppose, but amazing how capitalism promotes technology. Morality, traditions and I'm sure a few other big words get less and less respect though. Sort of a sad dichotomy.
