Funny as his comment sounds I believe most of us think that way. I'm taking 2 energy courses this quarter to finish my Bachelor's degree.

The reality of oil prices is that even with them going higher, the alternatives which there are few of cost more anyway than oil. Until we reach the 3 dollar range or better, things like ethanol don't begin to creep into the back of people's minds.

We've pumped the most oil out of the ground that we'll ever pump. So the professionals say. We've reached the peak so were going to face in 50 years a world where whatever alternative we choose will be in use.

OPEC last week decided to raise output. The only country who had capacity to do so was Saudi Arabia and the amount they could increase was so little it wouldn't matter. As a society, at some point, we'll change our ways. It's inevitable..........

you must have a vw diesel or something. Not a truck.

I had my powerchoke and thank god I sold it 2.9 years ago. As of todays prices I save over $104 a month having gas auto vs my old F350 powerchoke. (for my application).

Plus no one can control the price of gas. Again I do not care since the ammount I use in my auto's it not much and it is cheap. American has been spoiled for years and now more people need oil, not just the USA.

The price increase is not bad at all. I laugh at the people that complain about the prices when they are the ones that selected the disel truck getting 15 to 17 mpg of the SUV getting 13 mpg. Nevermind the meal ticket over $40K. unreal. They complain about the upkeep and not the price when buying.

It goes up $0.15 around here and people complain to no end. Welcome to life people. Now diesel prices are a joke. he he he .

I did complain when I got my truck... It cost almost 3x what my parents first house did...

For 80% of my work, I could get a little Ranger, S10, Toy ect. I would get better mileage, say 25mpg. But, I would have to make two trips because thier bed and weight capacity is less than 1/2 of mine, which gets 15mpg combined. So, out the window goes that idea. It would cost more in fuel, and in time. I can haul 2.5x the load, and get better overall economy.

You are right(hate to admit it but /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif ) We are spoiled from lower prices than the global average. I think it will eventually turn out that we start working more locally. I have contractor friends that drive long distances to do work, and others who like thier community, but found a job that has pay that makes it worth thier effort to drive further to program the next super chip.

We have been working locally only. We have had jobs within a 45 mile radius. I hate the commute, even if they are only 1-3 week jobs. And, I hate paying the extra on fuel, not to mention more frequent oil changes, tire wear ect.

We are, unfortunately, tied to big business too. All the manufactures have recently introdcuced all new engines(last 5 years or so). All new, smog efficient, powerful, CAD designed stuff. They built a lot in to these new engines, but left out mileage...

Now, I do laugh at some folks too... Those who have SUV's and trucks and all who do not use them. I use my truck; it is important to me to have that function. But, for the lifted 3/4 ton diesel that never go further off raod then the front lawn when they are washed, well... Or a Hummer that has never been off road...

Prices for diesel are a joke. So is gas. The other thing about all this is the prices are going up at a high rate, yet there are the fuel companies making record profits... They're raking us over the coals a bit, there is no doubt about it...

I agree that is why my application a diesel truck was a waste.

I work within 35 minutes from home (about 33 miles) (which is a very short drive to Hartford CT).

I have 2 co workers living in NY that travel over 1.5 hours to work (one way). some are near the shore. These two guys bought new cars the same time I bought my F350. Both the guys have over 300K since 1997! They travel over 80 miles one way! They buy the cheap gas since they go through a "tanker load" each week.

I am going to buy stock in Mobil since if you can't bet them, join them! Going tomorrow to the broker. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"I my Audi with a turbo and 1hp per cubic centimeter I in 93 Octane."

Whoops, big error here. That Audi engine has at least 2000 cubic centimeters.... so 2000 HP, I don't think so. 100 HP per liter is a high performance engine.

The tough part about working locally is the cost to purchase a home within the commerce area. Big bucks. So to have a desireable home, you must commute. Consider that time on the road part of your work day.

I have both, GSXR. 2 VW diesels for economy and a Cummins wrapped with Dodge for heavy work. My Cummins consistantly gets 20mpg or more, '86 VW is about 45mpg and '01 VW-TDI gets about 50mpg. I am now cashing in on the longevity of the diesels because they are all paid for. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Right now the only gas motors I own are on the push lawn mower, pressure washer and generator.

Sorry, maybe a time lapse, earlier in the thread BigDave wrote ...

"In my Dodge truck with 1hp per cubic inch I put 87 Octane. I my Audi with a turbo and 1hp per cubic centimeter I in 93 Octane. Depends on how much the engine is stressed."

Or are you interested in the Highbeam story?...

Ooops...this metric stuff still seems foreign sometimes. 2.7 liters & 265hp. Hmmm, uhhh 100hp per liter?

Okay, I just checked under the hood. It has 2671cc's. So 1hp per 10cc's. That doesn't sound as impressive. Running a conversion comes up with 163 cubic inches. So, that's still a lot more power per cubic inch than my Hemi.

Thanks, for catching my mistake.
