Dave,
You haven't aggravated me per se; and wanting a published price is just unrealistic in the clearly advantage to the seller world in which we do business with most sellers who are in business because they know they have an advantage over the buyer. Ask yourself this: Why would a seller disadvantage themselves on purpose if they did not have to? They woul;dn't and don't. That's why marketing firms make the huge $ they do figuring out how to sell today's snake oil to women in the form of cosmetics, etc.
Why do supermarkets, clothing stores, appliance manufacturers offer rebates instead of just giving us the best price? Because most people forget the rebate, don't send it in on time, or forget the boxtop, bar code, whatever and end up paying the non reduced price in the end.
Most sales that take place are not actually sales, they are order taking by a salesman.
The person goes to Walmart to buy a TV because it is the cheapest price. Walmart still makes money because they sell a gazillion TV's at less then anyone else because they have beaten the manufacturer into submission. Rubbermaid actually went out of business because they tried to stand up to Walmart years ago , and another company Scovill bought them out after Walmart refused to carry their products for what Rubbermaid wanted to sell them for.
I'm not saying change can't happen, just that what you wish for is pie in the sky at this point in time.

I always joke that I wish my favorite wholesale club would sell cars - just go in, pay the cashier, and drive away :D

If they published their prices they would simply evolve in a retailer. You could buy your equipment at Wally World or Lowes and be on your way. That would work for some, for others it would be a nightmare. As an earlier poster mentioned, JD is already experimenting with that idea and most posts I've read about it on here have not been favorable. And we've seen similar debates about chainsaws

Dealers are what I consider similar to a Value Added Reseller (VAR). Many industries have this setup - where you can buy straight from the Company at MSRP or hit one of their VARs for better pricing and/or support, before, during and after the sale. The tractor and auto companies basically force you to shop with one of their VARs - but do publish the MSRP. So in a sense, you are getting a published price.

Before the Big Box days, you could get good service from a Mom and Pop style retail business which may include making deals on pricing - but those types of places are getting squeezed out all the time in favor of the Big Box. Some may have done it to themselves, others just simply couldn't compete. Dealers are one of the last of the Mom and Pop shop - for better or worse

So, some day you will probably be able to walk into Lowes or TSC and browse Kubota, JD NH, etc CUTS all lined up on the lot - take the little ticket to the cashier and be on your way - somehow that thought just bugs me.....

This is not directed to you or any else. I have noticed lately that the box stores are cheap on some items but expensive on others. Example,5 pounds of deck screws $18.00 at Home depot. Buying bulk at the mom and pops hardware $1.00 a pound same thing same brand.(just double bagged instead of boxed) Heat lamps for my chickens Almost $11.00 each(phillips brand) at home depot,$4.95 at TSC (westinghouse brand) probably less at the hardware.

Hmm... ever wonder how salespeople and/or business owner's think whenever they're in a situation when the "shoe is on the other foot" ?

You know; they have to buy equipment and parts and other "consumable's" in their daily lives - just like anybody else...

Ya 'spose they're calculating margins, mark-up, profits? Or do you think they're wondering if the salesperson is on the level and treating them in a fair manner by presenting them with the same terms that they would offer any other buyer?

Any sales-type folk's out there that feels like they've been "taken to school" by some other "ethically challenged" business person?

Our very local NH dealer who is currently building a very large new facility about four miles from the old one spent almost an hour bragging how he had "jewed" down everyone he hired to get the building complete.... both materials and labor.

Known the guy my entire life .......... and I drive thirty miles to another dealer cause I just can't do business with the one two miles away.

Maybe its "pie in the sky" but I am honest with those I do business with and expect the same from others including salespeople. If I walk in an auto or tractor dealership and specifically ask for best price on an item I expect an honest answer. That answer could be we don't give the best price simply by the customer asking you must play games for an hour or it could be the price is ___. It has been my experience that most of the time the salesperson gives a price that most customers know is more than actual amount the dealer will take for the item. This is poor ethics in my ever so humble opinion.

% off MSRP is a terrible way to find a good deal. Your best just to call around and see what prices you can find. As a dealer, we're not even aware what MSRP is unless we sit and specificly calculate it.

Sorry but I find that statement very hard to believe.
