Should be just fine with any mounted disc you can lift, or just about any transport 11' or smaller.

Heavier is better

How much soil penetration you get with a Tandem Disc Harrow is primarily a factor of how much Disc Harrow weight bears on each of the pans and pan diameter.

The adjustment of the gang angles is secondary factor that will affect pan penetration. Pan spacing is a third factor affecting pan penetration. Pans spaced @ 9" will cut deeper than pans spaced @ 7".

With an MX5100 you can pull a Disc Harrow with 22" diameter pans as wide as your outside to outside tire width or a tad wider. The max depth a Disc Harrow with 22" diameter pans will penetrate is 8".

MONROE TUFLINE is a respected Disc Harrow manufacturer. Perusing their web site you will get a feel for how fast Disc Harrow weight increases with pan diameter.

I am pretty sure you will stall out on the second pass with a Disc Harrow with pans 24" in diameter.

Bear in mind Disc Harrow have to be pulled at a good clip to smooth land. If pulled slowly, pans cut and drop soil in the same place. You want the pans to fling soil from high areas into the air, so soil drops in a new location after moving through the air.

A 'Transport' Disc Harrow (as opposed to a Three Point Hitch mounted Tandem Disc Harrow) is supported by it's rubber tires. The amount of ground contact/penetration is controlled by the hydraulic lift. So, wheeled 'transport' Disc Harrows are a bit more flexible than Three Point Hitch mounted Tandem Disc Harrows.

Disc Harrows and PTO powered roto-tilers are both soil mixing implements. For five acres either implement will serve.

I agree with Jeff above on disk selection, 22 inch pans would be my choice.

For an MX5100 second gear a heavy duty 6 or 7 ft. Tiller would be my first choice. One pass at this speed and you can scoop up the dirt and use it for the culverts. Best to do this when the ground has enought moisture to work up.

If you need to till the entire field I would make one pass north to south in third gear with the tiller then wait a week or two. Make a second pass in third gear running east west.

I have 30+ acres that looks EXACTLY like that. I use a 30Hp 16 speed 4WD tractor with a loader. Total combined weight with the tiller, tractor and FEL is just over 4,000lbs. But my 250 sexy self in the seat and a half a ton of rocks in the loader with a 6 foot woods tiller running at 540RPM, even after glyphosate on the sod was just scratching the surface. Sure, I had some descent looking places here and there but I knew something was wrong. And lots of people gave me good advice to no avail. Please take a half hour and call the guys at Everything Attachments. Ask for Jeremy. He put me in a heavy 7 footer that was gear driven. No chain. He told me that if the tiller was "pushing" the tractor forward too much, then take off the outer tines on both sides the first time you till it. Unbelievable the difference that unit made. They know their products pretty good there. Make sure you know the year, make and model of your unit and they'll match you with the right tiller. Guaranteed. PLUS, FREE SHIPPING within 1,000 miles of the Carolina's. Give them a shot. If you don't like them - don't buy. But I'm sure you will. Good luck and Godspeed - BotaTrac Out!

I talked with Jeremy today. For the hog rooting he suggested a landscape rake if the soil was soft enough without any grass or a 7’ land leveler.

I don't think you will have any trouble pulling a 6' disc, we used to pull one with a 40 year old (then) Ford 8N. I spent last weekend pulling a drag behind that was twice that wide with only 20 more horsepower than you have and it did fine.

You definitely have wayyyyyyy more disc than tractor!!!! Nice problem to have. :)

Appreciate the replies everyone. It's roughly 5 acres and pretty good topsoil. Some areas on the farm are a bit sandy. The farm is about 3 hours north of Houston so I was looking at this bush hog 2D7818 but wasn't sure if it was too heavy. Sounds like I may need to look at a tiller. With the depth of some of the holes, I wasn't sure if a tiller would help to level the dirt as it works. The field has gotten worse since this pic but it gives you a pretty good idea of what I'm dealing with. We have started trapping (caught 8 weekend before last) and I now have a thermal scope.

It does a real good job but not perfect as the output depends on the input rate and ability to digest. I follow with a spike toothed harrow. TSC has a light duty one. I got mine from Small Farm Innovations in Caldwell, Tx......not far NW of where you are. Phillip (owner) is a super guy.
