Guys I just bought a new Tc40 with 4wd and I need to buy a disc harrow. My question is what size harrow should I buy? Several friends suggested a 20 by 20 harrow. Will my tractor pull this size harrow effectively? Please give me your opinions.

Richard, a 20 by 20 must be two rows of 20 disc blades each? Most times, a disc is measured in width, like 6 feet. 20 blades would be a pretty wide one, maybe 6-7 feet. Probably well suited for your tractor. The other big consideration is the weight of the disc. A lightweight model won't cut much, but will pull a lot easier. A heavyweight will cut much better and of course, require more HP to drag it along. Just for reference, last fall I borrowed a 6 1/2 foot (I recall it had 20 blades across) seriously heavy disc. My little JD 790 (30 hp) pulled it just fine in our relatively sandy soil/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Are you talking about a disc or a harrow? They do make combination units but I don't think anything that would fit your tractor. You should be able to pull an 8' disc no problem. As far as a harrow goes you could easily pull a 12' harrow with that tractor. I wouldn't get anything other than a wheel disc with hydraulics though. The three points don't do half the work that they do.

Do you find many 8' transport disc where you are from? The smallest I can find here is a 12', I would love a 8' but I can pull a 10' with no problem so if you know of any please let me know.

find a dealer that sells athens disc harrows they are well built heavy duty and the transport harrows start at 7'6" which would be just about right for a tc40 12' would really be pushing it. these are top of the line so expect to pay a little.

I have a TN-65 and currently use a 10' from my neighbor, I have never heard of Athens but will check them out as I would love to get a 8 footer for working in our pens. Thanks for the help.

My friend just bought a 10 footer this last weekend at a farm sale for $100. I don't know of any right off hand but they go at farm sales quite often it's just getting the time to be there.
